Baton Rouge Group of the Sierra Club We are a local group of the Delta Chapter of the Sierra Club centered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the surrounding Capital Area Region.

To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives. We have Monthly meetings for the Executive Committee, the First Monday of Every Month excep

t on holidays, 7pm via Zoom. Our General Membership meetings are on the 4th Thursday of the month at 7 pm via Zoom.0

Recreational Outings are led about once per month. We travel to sites within a 90 minute carpool ride. Additional outings closer to the metro area at "hybrid" rustic/urban locations are being prospected now. We welcome your suggestions and look forward to visiting those locations. The Baton Rouge Group was founded in fall 1969 when a call was put forth for persons interested in establishing a "Group" of the Sierra Club for Louisiana and Mississippi. Persons gathered in New Orleans for the first meetings and within short order a "Delta Chapter" for the two states was founded and officially recognized by the national Sierra Club. Concurrent to the founding of the Delta Chapter, local "Groups" based in several metropolitan areas were established for members to meet on a regular basis. The Sierra Club is unique amongst most major environmental conservation organizations in that the general membership is participatory and has democratic rights to elect our leaders, whether it be for your the local Group in your community, your Chapter at the Statewide level, and for choosing those officers which represent the several million members of us nationwide on the Sierra Club national Board of Directors. In addition many volunteer leadership capacities exist and are filled by members on appointment, working closely with the Club's employed staff members on a variety of programs.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) will hold a public hearing on two projects to expand plastics production at Shintech’s Plaquemine facility.

Shintech is planning to increase its production capacity for ethylene and vinyl chloride monomer – both raw ingredients in plastics – at its facility in Iberville Parish, south of Baton Rouge. Combined, the expansions have the potential to emit an annual 747 tons per year of toxic carbon monoxide; 370 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds; and 79 tons of fine particle pollution, linked to multiple heart and lung diseases.

The projects could also potentially emit nearly 1.8 million tons annually of greenhouse gases, more than the amount produced by four natural gas-fired power plants in one year.

The LDEQ scheduled the meeting for 6 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2024, at the Iberville Parish Council Meeting Room – 2nd floor, 58058 Merriam Street, Plaquemine, LA70765. See the public notice and draft permit package for more information.

We are supporting outreach for Vision Green 2050, a climate pollution reduction plan being developed by the Capital Region Planning Commission for the Baton Rouge area. The plan will help support future projects and funding applications to improve transportation, build self-sufficient local clean energy, and expand green spaces.

Over the next few months we’ll be sharing information about climate pollution reduction, and opportunities to participate in the process.
