We help eligible U.S. citizens living abroad register to vote an absentee ballot. The Center for U.S. In fact, in two recent elections of U.S. voters voted.

Voters Abroad Turnout Project believes that every overseas vote counts, yours included. Senators, enough overseas voters cast ballots to swing the outcome. If the overseas voter population was ranked as a state, it would be the 37th most populous (smaller than Kansas, but larger than New Mexico!). But in 2020, the federal government estimates that fewer than 8% of overseas U.S. And a federal repor

t released in 2018 estimated that 82% of registered expats who do not cast a ballot and 40% of unregistered expats are blocked by procedural barriers. In certain regions, as many as 97% of registered, non-voting survey respondents reported that they were unable to complete the voting process. In addition, as many as 25% or more of ballots cast are not counted. Our mission is to change that. Myth: Since I’m an overseas voter, my ballot only gets counted in D.C.
Fact: Your ballot is counted in the state you lived in before moving abroad. Your vote impacts the communities you care about!

Myth: I heard I can only return my ballot through the U.S. embassy in the country where I’m currently living.
Fact: While you can return a ballot at a U.S. embassy, it isn’t your only option! All states offer ballot return via standard international mail. And, in some states, you can even return your ballot by email or fax.

Myth: Ballots from American voters abroad aren’t even counted.
Fact: All ballots must be counted to certify an election, including ballots from overseas voters. We strongly encourage you to return your ballot as early as you can to avoid missing the deadline in your state.

Myth: I am already a registered voter in the United States. So, I don’t need to register as a voter abroad.
Fact: Not true! If you move abroad, you must complete a Federal Postcard Application (FPCA). This single form registers you to vote as an American voter abroad and requests your absentee ballot.

Myth: Overseas voters can only vote in Presidential elections.
Fact: Overseas voters can vote in all federal elections, including midterm House and Senate elections like 2026! And, depending on their state, in local elections, too.

Myth: American citizens who are outside of the U.S. can’t participate in elections.
Fact: Thanks to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) signed by President Reagan in 1986, eligible American citizens can vote from abroad.
