AMBI is thrilled to welcome Dr. Nedah Nemati as Assistant Professor of Bioethics starting in August 2026. Dr. Nemati earned her MSc in Biological Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Nemati’s research examines how tools used in evolutionary and computational neuroscience shape our understanding of human and nonhuman animal behavior. Her current NSF-supported project centers on the impacts of AI on behavioral ontology in neuroscience and builds on a phenomenological framework of “lived experience.”

The Alden March Bioethics Institute was established in 1993 as the Center for Medical Ethics Education and Research. Under the direction of John Balint, M.D., over the next decade, medical school classes in ethics, clinical consultation and several research programs emerged. Today, we offer graduating medical students a distinction in bioethics, have expanded our clinical consultations, offer ongoing resources to graduate resident education, and continue with research in the field of bioethics.

"The work of revising the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is under way, withsome, but not enough, involvement of people who use or have used psychiatric services. Along with aneed for more inclusion of such people is a need for strategies to better avoid the problems that have occurred in other inclusive mental health contexts—in particular, tokenism and poor uptake of input from people with this firsthand experience. Disentangling the reasons for inclusion can help in tackling these problems"
