Almost half of the people serving life without parole are 50 years old or more and one in four is at least 60 years old.

As you know MJA is well into our ballot initiative to restore Good Time (https://gtballot2023.org). We started in August and now we are getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving this week. But, as we sit down this Thursday to enjoy a dinner w/friends and family, there are loved ones still sitting in an MDOC facility waiting for us to complete our mission. MJA along with many faithful volunteers have organized and distributed 10's of thousands of blank petition sheets all across Michigan. Now we are waiting for you to help us cross the finish line. The success of this campaign is in your hands.

The only way you will see the Good Time policy appear in Nov. 2024 on the ballot is if you take that petition sheet you have received and get 10 people to sign it. Then (and this is the most important step) you must return it to us at;

Michigan Justice Advocacy
PO Box 2814
Ann Arbor, MI 48106

We are constantly asked how many signatures we have gathered and we have been completely transparent with our progress. So far, we have physically distributed around 17,000 petition forms, yet we have only received 800 back, which is a disappointing 4.7% return. Frankly, as many volunteer driven campaigns go, there are a handful of dedicated and highly productive volunteers out there pounding the pavements weekly, educating the public about Good Time and putting in the hours to collect signatures. We will not be successful unless more volunteers rise up to help us multiply our efforts. As you have heard it said, "Many hands make light work" and this is very true. It will be the difference between restoring Good Time or not. Now is the time to rise up and let our leaders in Lansing know what we want.

We are not asking you for your money, we are asking you for your time. Many of you tell us that you also want to see Good Time become a reality. Good ... so do we. So if you are someone who has said they want to see Good Time come back then we urge you to join us in this fight. Ask to be added to our leadership team and join us for our weekly strategy and tactics meeting. Become part of the solution. It's high time we get Good Time back here in Michigan ... It's Time For Good Time!

Behind Bars: Bunking Concerns

From a whistle-blower at Brooks Correctional Facility:

"I walked past a guy that passed out in Health Care. He had fallen off his bunk, top bunk, that is, and he has a history of having seizures! His balance has become questionable, and he has a cane, so why was he on a top bunk to begin with? He said that he had fallen off the top bunk several times... this is ridiculous! Every prisoner goes through intake when they arrive at this facility! Why wasn't this caught during intake? I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't sustained brain damage after repeatedly hitting his head! Falling off these top bunks around all this steel is a sure way to hurt yourself seriously!"

Upcoming Expungement Clinics

From our friends at Safe & Just Michigan:

Automatic expungement is now a reality in Michigan, but petition expungements can still clear more kinds of offenses than are allowed by automatic expungement. Safe & Just Michigan is working with partner organizations throughout the state to help people access free or low-cost expungement help at the events listed below. Please follow our social media on Facebook and Twitter for the most up-to-date information:

- Dearborn Heights: The city of Dearborn Heights expungement fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Richard A. Young Center, 5400 McKinley St. in Dearborn Heights.

- Saginaw: The city of Saginaw will host an expungement fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Saginaw Community Action Center, 2824 Perkins St. in Saginaw.
