The Union County Sheriff’s Office was proud to host The Independence Fund and a round table to discuss de-escalation training through the Veterans Justice Initiative (VJI). The event was held Wednesday afternoon in the Eddie Cathey Community Room and attendees included law enforcement leaders, elected officials, judicial officials, members of non profit organizations and veteran organizations.

The goal of the VJI is to provide de-escalation training for members of the Criminal Justice community when dealing with Veterans in crisis. Tim Kennedy, a US Army Master Sergeant and Green Beret, was also in attendance. Kennedy also a retired UFC fighter, is shown posing with Sheriff Eddie Cathey.

The drive to bring awareness to homeless veterans

62 year old veteran Stephen Lamm started his journey 9.29.19 leaving Colorado Springs on his scooter headed for Washington DC.

Yes, you read that right. Scooter. Stephen is loaded down with a tent, sleeping bag and a few amenities for his journey. His hope is to raise awareness about homeless veterans and create meaningful change.

His plan involves funding for creating manufacturing plants to create sustainable and affordable housing, employing homeless veterans, that will then become the homes for the homeless veterans surrounding every major city. These home would be based around co-ops that aid in getting veterans back on their feet and the resources and help they may need.

While the logistics of the final organization that would complete these tasks are still in the infancy stage, the heart and passion behind his ride is fully formed.
