Friday 13 September - A Walk along Traditional Paxos Footpaths!

In our walk will discover some of the oldest footpaths but also olive trees on the island, beginning at the historic domed church of Ypapandi!

Before paved roads appeared in Paxos in the 1960s the only way of of crossing the island was across footpaths and donkey trails. Many of these, framed by dry stone walls and with carved stone steps, survive to this day.

Time: 9:15 am for a 9:30 start (walk ends approximately at 11)

Meeting point: Ypapandi church belfry (On the main road from Lakka there is a sign to Ypapandi on your right, not far from Lakka)

Fee: 15€, 10€ for Friends of Paxos 2024

Reservations: Please send us a msg here. Please wear sturdy and comfortable shoes!

"2024 is the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition which opened in Paris on the boulevard des Capucines on 15 April 1874. The Musée d’Orsay, Paris celebrated this anniversary with a major exhibition - “Paris 1874 – Inventing Impressionism” (26 March - 14 July 2024) of 130 works. The same exhibition under the title - “Paris 1874 – the Impressionist Moment”, will be on view at the National Gallery, Washington DC, from 8 September 2024 to 19 January 2025.

A selection of works shown in the original show is juxtaposed to works shown at the Paris Salon of the period, emphasizing the visual shock the new paintings provided to the Paris public, but also establishing more nuanced parallels between the Impressionists and the Salon painters. This is a wonderful opportunity to discover the first major paintings by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas, Manet, Cézanne and the many other painters who took part in the Impressionist and Salon Paris exhibitions of the crucial year of 1874."

Time: 8:30 - 9:45 pm. Lecture is in English.

Place: Old School yard, Loggos

Wednesday 7 August
Cisterns & Churches of Gaios - A Paxos Walk!

Gaios is historically the principal port of Paxos and its largest town. The waterworks of Gaios built during the British occupation in the 19th century are the most important on the island. Our walk will take us past the two great public cisterns of Gaios, Agion Anargyron and the great British cisterns, as well as three typical Paxos churches: Agios Spyridon, a small family church belonging to the Kouva family, Agioi Anargyroi, the main church of the southern quarter of town, and the imposing church of Agioi Apostoloi with its historic belfry attached to the cemetery of Gaios.

The tour will be conducted in English, French and in Greek by Corfu Byzantine art specialist and art conservator Akis Papadatos and art historian Chris Boïcos.

Date: Wednesday 7 August

Time: 9:30 - 11:30 am. Tour in Greek and in English/French.

Meeting Point: Porto Vecchio bar, Gaios harbour.
