Great to meet yesterday with Mary Lou McDonald, Mairéad Farrell, Pearse Doherty, Matt Carthy and Sinn Féin candidate Mark Lohan for the Galway West by-election, alongside COPE and Domestic Violence Response services in Castlegar Ballinfoyle Neighbourhood Centre.

We had a broad and important discussion on domestic abuse and the cultural shift urgently needed across society, including the critical involvement of men in prevention, accountability and challenging harmful attitudes.

We discussed the pervasive impact of domestic violence within communities, the pressures created by housing insecurity, and the inconsistent responses too many women still experience within the criminal justice system and family law processes, including the operation of the in camera rule.

There was also important recognition of older women’s experiences, and of domestic abuse within the broader context of adult child-to-parent and parent-to-adult child relationships.

A huge amount of work remains, but these conversations matter and must continue.

Go Purple your way this 15th May 💜

On Go Purple Day, we stand together to raise awareness of domestic abuse and to show support for women, children and families impacted by abuse in our communities. Whether you wear purple, decorate your workplace or school, bake purple treats or simply start a conversation, every action helps break the silence and reminds people that support is available. Domestic abuse can affect anyone, and no one should have to face it alone.

Domestic Violence Response Galway (DVR) provides free and confidential support for women affected by domestic abuse across Galway City and County. Services include one-to-one support, counselling, advocacy and accompaniment support.

If you or someone you know needs support, you can contact Domestic Violence Response Galway:
Phone: 091 866 740 / 087 773 7957

In an emergency, contact An Garda Síochána on 999/112.
24-hour support is also available from Women’s Aid on 1800 341 900.

Together, we can help create safer communities where everyone can live free from fear. 💜

Domestic Violence Response Galway in partnership with Safe Ireland and Cope Galway was delighted to deliver an overview of the Safe & Together Model yesterday at Galway Bay Hotel to an audience of 74 participants working to support children, families, and communities affected by domestic violence.

The session brought together professionals from a wide range of services and organisations, creating an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration, share learning, and deepen understanding of responses that keep children safe while supporting the non-offending parent. It was encouraging to see such strong engagement and commitment from those working across the community to improve outcomes for families experiencing domestic abuse.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Galway City Local Community Safety Partnership, Galway City Council and Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) for their valued support and collaboration in making this event possible. Working together across sectors continues to play a vital role in building safer communities and ensuring families receive informed and effective support.

We also appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion, reflection, and shared commitment to responding to domestic violence in a way that is child-centred, survivor-informed, and accountability-focused.
