As one of the largest and most successful college access and success programs in the country, since 2000 College Possible has helped more than 80,000 students from under-represented communities get into and through college through an intensive curriculum of coaching and support. Our pioneering model matches students with a near-peer coach and an evidence-based curriculum designed to help students overcome the most common barriers to getting into college and completing their degree – all at no cost to students or their families. Nationwide, College Possible students are three times more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree within six years than their peers from similar backgrounds. We talk a lot about students “beating the odds.” But who set those odds? And why are we asking students to be the gamblers? 🎲

At National College Attainment Network's 2026 National Conference in Las Vegas, Jesse Hendrix, executive director of College Possible Texas, is taking on that question in his lightning talk, “Betting on Our Students.”

Jesse will challenge how we talk about risk, struggle and success in college access, and what it might mean to change the game instead of just coaching students to win it.

Sometimes, the support students need isn’t just tuition. It’s a kitchen table, a reliable car or a laptop.

For Jada, a College Possible Minnesota student and single mother, that support made all the difference.

“Having my laptop meant I didn’t have to go to the library every day just to get my schoolwork done, which made balancing school and being a mom much easier.”

With support from College Possible, Jada was able to cover essential expenses, repair her car, purchase a laptop and create more stability for herself and her son.

“These things may seem simple, but they made a huge difference in my day-to-day life and took away a lot of stress.”

Student parents represent nearly one in five undergraduate students in the U.S., yet many face unique financial and caregiving challenges while pursuing a degree.

For Shari Baker, one student's journey is a reminder of what's possible when students have access to higher education and the support to succeed. After arriving in the United States from Mexico as an undocumented student, he faced challenge after challenge on his path to college. Today, he's an immigration attorney helping others navigate the same journey he once did.
