STATEMENT:
During this election period, it is essential that we, as a society, uphold mutual respect and recognise one another first and foremost as individuals and as citizens of Malta, beyond political choices.
Every person must be free to make their own decision guided by conscience, one that transcends the objectives or positions of any voluntary organisation, particularly when considering the needs of vulnerable individuals who may be unable to speak for themselves or may not recognise injustice. No political affiliation or “colour” should ever alter our fundamental beliefs or diminish the rights of persons with disabilities.
As parents and guardians of vulnerable individuals, we carry a profound responsibility to advocate for our rights and, above all, for the rights of our children.
It is for this reason that I am compelled to share this message today. After dedicating significant time and effort to building a Gozitan community that supports parents, and to initiating projects long absent in Gozo, projects aimed at helping our children thrive, be respected, and be treated with dignity and humanity; I have actively participated in meetings to ensure that our voices are heard. In doing so, I have also faced personal attacks, at times even affecting my son.
I cannot remain silent in the face of continued injustice. Speaking out is not a choice but a responsibility, particularly in my role as chairperson, and especially at a time when election proposals directly impact the lives of those we represent.
This is not the path we should follow. We should not be divided by conflict or personal attacks, but united by a shared purpose.
Let us work together to safeguard the rights of our children and relatives. With unity and determination, nothing will prevent us from achieving our goals, because our children need us now more than ever.
Above all, let us commit to respecting every individual around us, so that we may build a better country—one in which our children can truly thrive.
