“A democracy without Black representation is not a democracy. It is a direct attack on our democracy and our Constitution to dismantle majority-Black districts,” said Kristen Clarke, NAACP General Counsel.

Tennessee’s lawmakers passed maps to redraw the state’s only majority-Black district. This move divides the Black vote and minimizes its influence.

Today, the NAACP Tennessee State Conference filed a lawsuit to block the State’s plan to silence Black representation.

This fight is about protecting our voting rights, our voices, and our democracy.

SURE stands with the Southern Poverty Law Center and countless other organizations who are fighting to protect the rights of Black voters.

The SPLC denounces the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the Louisiana redistricting case.

The SPLC will continue fighting alongside communities of color in Louisiana and across the Deep South to protect their rights — to fair representation, to voting and to a democracy that works for all of us.

Many may not know the origin of SURE. In 2021, a small group of people who were searching for a way to take action about the racial injustices we were witnessing came together and began meeting.
One of those injustices was the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, followed by the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. We honor their lives through the work that we do and will always continue to say their names.

Today, February 23, 2026, marks the sixth anniversary of the death of Ahmaud Arbery. The Brunswick community and the Ahmaud Arbery Foundation are commemorating the day with the Fifth Annual Ahmaud Arbery Memorial Run, held in Brunswick for the first time.
The death of Ahmaud Arbery on February 23, 2020, is highly a catalyst for major criminal justice reform, a focal point in the American racial justice movement, and a case that highlighted the dangers of systemic racism and vigilante violence. The 25-year-old unarmed Black man was pursued and murdered by three white men while jogging in a Georgia neighborhood, an event that sparked national outrage, particularly after a video of the incident was leaked months later.
Our thoughts are with His family
