👨🏻‍💻 Preparing firefighters for the growing challenges of wildfires requires more than equipment; it requires training, cooperation and continuous learning.

That is why FoRISK and SNEP co-organised the fifth edition of the Forest Camp, an international capacity-building event in 🇵🇱Poland where firefighters🧑‍🚒, forest managers👷🏻‍♂️, researchers👩🏻‍🔬 and risk management experts🚧 worked together to strengthen wildfire preparedness through practical exercises and knowledge exchange.

Reflecting on his experience, Jörg Tremmel🇩🇪 from the Otterbach-Otterberg Municipal Association Volunteer Fire Brigade shared:

"Participating in the ForestCamp was a valuable experience for us. It provided essential food for thought on how we can further improve and expand the training of our emergency personnel in forest and vegetation firefighting."

He also noted:

"The practical fire tests and extinguishing exercises, accompanied by guidance on tactical, resource-efficient approaches, offered valuable insights for our own work."

For FoRISK, supporting this transfer of practical knowledge is essential to building more fire-resilient communities across Europe. More info about the Forest Camp 👉🏻 https://forisk.org/forest-camp-2026-a-fifth-edition-the-hottest-week-on-record-and-a-new-line-in-eu-wildfire-policy/

The wildfire near Bordeaux revealed a hidden piece of World War II history that nobody expected. As firefighters battled the flames, explosions first thought to be gas cylinders were later linked to old German and French am******on buried beneath the forest. Bomb disposal teams have now recovered around 400 shells and pieces of am******on from Le Porge as residents return home.

The fire burned more than 40,000 hectares in about 10 days and destroyed over 180 homes in the area. Most of the am******on found consisted of German and French mortar shells, along with some high explosive anti tank shells. Officials believe the mu*****ns may simply have been abandoned after the war.

It is a stark reminder that traces of the Second World War are still buried across parts of France. In Le Porge, it took a major wildfire to bring this history back to the surface. Residents were allowed home after several days of demining work, but the recovery from the fire is only beginning.
