Hello Everyone!
We would like to share this statement regarding recent happenings from our Student Organization Advisor, Professor Omer Mozaffar.
"The current unrest across the country gives us not only a taste of the discontent across our nation, due to systemic inequity. The work of BuildOn is important in alleviating some of the difficulties some of our neighbors across the city have been going through.
The challenge is to rise up beyond the level of a student organization hobbyist. The seriousness of our concerns about these inequities are illustrated by the seriousness in which we invest ourselves in this work.
This COVID19 pandemic illustrates that systemic inequity affects everyone. Workers in many parts of the city do not have the privilege of working from home: they had to leave the house, take public transportation, and work on-site. Thus, many caught and transmitted the virus. As a result, the entire city had to remain locked down.
Likewise, the structural racism in our society primarily affects African Americans, but affects us all.
We do not know the immediate future, whether we speak of the unrest, the pandemic, and the economy. One thing is certain: social media activism is the bare minimum. As members of BuildOn, action must happen.
