🇮🇹 Happy Columbus Day 🇺🇸
As President of the Italian American Alliance, I am honored to join our community in celebrating a day deeply meaningful to Italian Americans across this nation. Columbus Day is more than a commemoration of one man’s voyage — it embodies the spirit of exploration, cultural pride, and the resilience of our ancestors who navigated the challenges of assimilation and discrimination to enrich the American tapestry.
This day also reminds us of the struggles that shaped our history. In 1891, 11 Italian immigrants were lynched in New Orleans — one of the darkest acts of prejudice in our heritage — and that tragedy itself contributed to the recognition of Columbus Day as a symbol of Italian American acceptance in America.
Let us use this occasion to celebrate our traditions — language, music, food, family — and reflect on the path we’ve walked as a community. May it also be a day to reaffirm our commitment to defending the dignity and respect of Italian American identity, in dialogue with all others striving for recognition and understanding.
To all our members, allies, and friends: Happy Columbus Day. May we continue to uplift our heritage — through education, unity, and pride.
