Florida is home to plenty of creepy crawlies—and while most bites are minor, some can become a serious problem for pets.

Keep an eye out for:
🕷️ Widow spiders
🕸️ Brown recluse spiders (rare, but possible)
🐝 Bees & wasps
🐜 Fire ants
🐛 Stinging caterpillars

Call your veterinarian if your pet has:
⚠️ Facial swelling
⚠️ Difficulty breathing
⚠️ Severe pain or limping
⚠️ Vomiting or weakness
⚠️ A bite that becomes increasingly swollen or infected

The best prevention is simple: keep your yard tidy, inspect outdoor play areas, and supervise curious noses during walks.

Cookouts are a summer favorite, but some backyard staples can be dangerous for curious pets.

Keep these foods safely out of reach:
🌽 Corn cobs – Can cause serious intestinal blockages.
🍢 Wooden skewers – May splinter or become lodged in the mouth or stomach.
🧅 Onions – Toxic and can damage red blood cells.
🍇 Grapes & raisins – Can lead to kidney failure.
🍫 Chocolate – Contains compounds that are toxic to dogs.
🍺 Alcohol – Even small amounts can be dangerous.

The safest treat at the BBQ? One that's made just for pets! 🐾

Whether you're visiting the beach, relaxing by the pool, or walking near canals and retention ponds, keep these safety tips in mind:

🌊 Always supervise your pet around water.
🦺 Consider a life jacket for boating, kayaking, or pets that aren't strong swimmers.
🐊 Keep a safe distance from canals and retention ponds—they may contain hidden drop-offs, snakes, or even alligators.
💦 Rinse saltwater or pool chemicals from your pet's coat after swimming.
🥤 Bring fresh drinking water so they aren't tempted to drink from the ocean, pools, or standing water.

🌿🐾 Summer adventures are calling—but watch what your pet picks up along the way!

Sticks may seem like the perfect free toy, but they can splinter, damage teeth, or become lodged in the mouth or throat. Foxtails can be just as sneaky, working their way into paws, ears, noses, and skin and potentially causing painful injuries or infections.

After outdoor playtime, give your pet a quick paw, ear, and coat check—and maybe trade that stick for a pet-safe toy. 😅🦴

Explore. Play. Sniff everything. Just leave the sticks behind! 🐶🌴

This beautiful kitty is Chanel. At just eight months old, she was found abandoned at a campground and taken to Flagler Humane Society. Because she tested positive for feline leukemia (FeLV+), Flagler Humane couldn’t keep her, so they reached out to Cara Couch in Jacksonville, knowing she had other FeLV+ kitties, and Cara agreed to take her. Chanel lived the life of a queen with Cara, enjoying steady meals, a warm bed, other furry playmates and an abundance of human love.
When Chanel was 4 ½ years old, she came to live with us at Gracie’s Place and Farm. Chanel, with one floppy ear, proved to be a wonderful addition to our FELV+ family. Such a sweet little girl, she got along with all the other FeLV+ kitties, loved to eat, looked forward to soaking up the sunshine and playing with her furry friends.
Recently, we noticed Chanel slowing down. Then she started turning down food. It was clear the leukemia was taking over. On July 2nd, we took her to the emergency room, and they confirmed our worst fears – Chanel was dying. We took her back to Gracie’s Place and Farm that night and kept her comfortable. Surrounded by her furry friends, she crossed the rainbow bridge the next morning.
Farewell, sweet Chanel. You are missed by all of us at Gracie’s Place. Run free and we will see you again soon. ❤️🐾🌈
