Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BCE–65 CE), better known simply as Seneca, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, and playwright who became one of antiquity’s most influential thinkers. Born in Corduba, in present-day Spain, he emerged as a major voice of Stoicism, emphasizing reason, discipline, resilience, and control over one’s emotions.

Through works such as Letters from a Stoic, On the Shortness of Life, and On Anger, Seneca explored subjects including fear, suffering, wealth, happiness, and the value of time. Central to his philosophy was the belief that inner peace comes not from controlling the world around us, but from developing mastery over our own thoughts, actions, and character.

Seneca also served as an adviser to the Roman emperor Nero, placing him close to immense political power while exposing him to considerable personal danger. His life ended in 65 CE when Nero ordered him to take his own life. Nearly two thousand years later, Seneca’s writings remain influential, offering enduring lessons on living with purpose, strength, and self-control.
