The County Fair

A caravan of flatbed trucks, tractor trailers,
carrying merry-go-rounds, ferris wheels and wild mouse rides,
rumble down the dusty old road toward the deserted county fairgrounds.
Cattle vans and horse trailers, 4-H projects and local farm produce
will find their places in the the rows of barns, long empty.
Vendors loaded to the gunnels with kewpie dolls and teddy bears -
game hucksters, cotton candy machines and fried dough follow close behind.
Roustabouts with their mallets
will soon start driving slayer stakes
into the heart of a season.
They sound the death knell of summer.
