KPAC Launches Sunset Health Hub in Port Moresby

On Friday, 15 August 2025, KPAC PNG proudly launched the KPAC Sunset Health Hub, a milestone event witnessed by over 100 partners, champions, and community members. The moving ceremony marked a new chapter in community-led Service access and HIV response.

The Sunset Health Hub is a vibrant, non-clinical venue located outside traditional health facilities—designed to bring HIV testing, treatment, and prevention directly into the heart of National Capital District’s communities. It represents our commitment to dignity, accessibility, and empowerment.

🎉 What This Means for Our Communities:

We can now initiate PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) directly at the KPAC Sun-Set Health Hub.

Our outreach workers are trained and equipped to support Oral HIV Self-Testing and promote PrEP with confidence and care.

The hub offers a safe, welcoming space for key populations to access services without fear or stigma.

We were honored to have key champions from the National Department of Health, NACS, DFAT, and UN agencies join us in solidarity. Their presence reaffirmed the importance of community-led health initiatives and the power of partnerships.

This launch is not just a celebration—it’s a promise. A promise to continue building safe spaces, strengthening outreach, and ensuring no one is left behind in the fight against HIV.

We want to thank DFAT, UN AIDS Papua New GuineaUNAIDS, PATH. CCHS, NDoH, NACS, Health Equity Matters, NCD PHA, KPAC and all our families. KP Consortium Papua New Guinea

Over the past two weeks, our Outreach Workers have achieved so much — thanks to the incredible support of our resource persons who have guided and mentored our outreach teams.

Their commitment to walk alongside us, share knowledge, and uplift our efforts has made a real difference in how we deliver HAUS DUA and connect with our communities.

This is what community-led advocacy looks like: collaboration, empowerment, and shared purpose.

Thank you to our leaders and online champions who continues to believe in and support KPAC’s mission. 💙

This week marks the completion of the first 15 days since the launch of the KPAC Peer Outreach Program, a bold initiative run by communities, for communities. The journey has been deeply empowering, with outreach teams supporting one another to implement HAUS DUA - Yes to test with commitment and care. We targeting 300 hot spots mapped out by PSE.
As we close out the month of July 2025, here are some key reflections from the team:

1. While coordination was initially a challenge, the team has shown remarkable cooperation and unity, strengthening collaboration across all key population groups.

2. The tools introduced during this phase have significantly enhanced our ability to reach and test the right targets, improving both efficiency and impact.

3. We are especially grateful for the presence of experienced leaders and high-level stakeholders who have humbly engaged with our teams — offering mentorship, guidance, and encouragement at the grassroots level.

We extend our sincere thanks to our partners — NDoH, UNAIDS, World Vision, Burnet Institute, FHI 360, NACS, and DFAT — for their continued support and belief in community-led solutions

In response to the 300 hotspots identified during the 2022 Population Size Estimate (PSE), KPAC’s dedicated outreach teams have taken bold action to expand access to HIV prevention. As part of a renewed push, outreach workers are conducting targeted HAUS DUA and installing male condom dispensers to ensure free and discreet access for all.
We are proud to report the successful installation of 20 condom dispensers across high-traffic locations including:
• V8 (3 dispensers ), MMS (3 dispensers), PSG (2 dispens), Winju Lodge (3 disp), Noko Lodge (3 dispens), Motel Everest (2 disp), Galo (2 dispensers), Tokarara Market (1 dispens) & Paddies Hotel (2 dispens)
During community engagement, outreach teams conducted educational discussions highlighting the importance of condom use in HIV prevention. Stakeholders across all locations not only welcomed the initiative but actively expressed concern about HIV and committed to promoting condom use within their venues.
Notably, motel managers demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm and leadership, with several initiating interest in installing dispensers at their respective sites. Their commitment reflects growing ownership of prevention efforts within the private sector.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the KPAC outreach workers whose community connections enabled smooth coordination. Their dedication continues to move this work forward — with impact and heart.
Special thanks to DFAT, NdoH, UNAIDS, & NCD PHA for their generous support, enabling KPAC to deliver community-led, rights-based HIV prevention across Papua New Guinea. KPAC’s peer outreach workers were honoured to receive a visit from Dr. Gideon Nano, National HIV Program Manager, whose presence brought tremendous encouragement as outreach efforts officially commenced.
In his motivating address, Dr. Nano emphasized the critical importance of fast-tracking HIV-negative key population members onto PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and ensuring strong follow-up and retention. He reminded outreach teams that PrEP is a highly effective medication that protects HIV-negative individuals from acquiring HIV, but eligibility requires a confirmed negative result from an HIV test.
Dr. Nano stressed the need to equip peers with accurate and clear information when discussing PrEP. Outreach workers were urged to explain not only how PrEP works, but also the importance of regular HIV testing, adherence, and clinical follow-up. “The right information builds trust and helps peers make informed choices,” he said.
His visit reaffirmed KPAC's commitment to community-led strategies in HIV prevention and strengthened the confidence of outreach teams as they continue engaging with peers on the ground.
