Every year, streets in our cities are being repaved.

It’s great that potholes are being fixed, but did you know the City of Albany and the City of Troy both have local ordinances that require them to make common-sense safety improvements when streets are being repaved?

Each year, Albany and Troy spend millions of dollars on roadway resurfacing. Both cities are required to make complete streets improvements while repaving (per their own local ordinances), but more often than not, Albany and Troy fail to implement simple cost-effective improvements, like updating striping plans.

Sometimes streets aren’t re-striped at all, leaving communities without crosswalks for years even after repaving has been completed.

So, what’s the solution to repaving without improving? Our cities need to…

1. Make Improvements While Repaving!
2. Plan Ahead
3. Reference Existing Plans
4. Design Improvements

You may have seen us featured in last month’s issue of talking about opportunities for Albany’s street life 📰👀In 2025, the Albany Convention Center Authority (ACCA) partnered with us to explore key opportunities for improving connectivity, placemaking, and street life in Downtown Albany’s public spaces.

As a result of this exploration, we produced a “Connectivity + Placemaking in Downtown Albany Study Report” for Albany Convention Center Authority - ACCA. Included in this report are policies related to street life which are categorized into three topic areas (outdoor dining, outdoor vending and entertainment) that were identified through collaboration with other key entities and analysis of previous plans during research and development of this study.

🚲 Bike Valet at Art On Lark! 🖼️

This Saturday (6/6) presents the return of Art on Lark (12-6 pm).

Avoid the parking headache by taking two wheels to come support local artists and take in some live music. No need to lock your bike or worry about it while you stroll Lark Street — just ride up, check in, and hand off your bike to be securely parked and monitored so you can enjoy the day stress free.

This valet is made possible by Capital Streets, Albany Bicycle Coalition & with support from (now located at 472 Madison Ave!).

We’ll see you Saturday!

Last Friday we got to ride along with , Deputy Mayor Ellis, and a bunch of other city staff and cycling commuters for a sponsored Bike to Work Day.

For many of us, every day is bike to work day, but this beautiful day in particular was a great opportunity for some to see the city from a different perspective riding around.

We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Applyrs and her team to deliver better, safer, more enjoyable bike infrastructure throughout the City of Albany.

Every year, streets in our cities are being repaved.

Both the City of Albany and Troy have complete streets ordinances, requiring improvements to street infrastructure for vulnerable road users, including people walking and biking, when repaving.

Millions of dollars are spent each year in the Albany and Troy on roadway resurfacing. Both cities are required to make complete streets improvements while repaving per their own local ordinances, but more often than not Albany and Troy fail to implement simple cost-effective improvements, like updating striping plans.

In addition to ordinances, both communities have plans that clearly lay out where and what improvements would benefit community members. There’s also very clear guidance from the on how to design complete streets infrastructure and the Vision Zero Safety Action Plan outlining safety issues on our region’s roadways.

These are generally improvements that can be made affordably, just using paint after repaving, and yet sometimes streets aren’t re-striped at all, leaving communities without crosswalks for years even after repaving has been completed.

Last night’s community walk & talk in Troy was a dream!

Thank you to the 50+ people who showed up on a sunny spring evening to tour South Troy on foot with neighbors and friends to discover hidden gems in our own backyard. The energy was as warm as the sun’s rays were warming us on the scenic outlook in Osgood Woods at golden hour ☀️

Special thanks to (notably NOT a historian but a proud self proclaimed “enthusiastic nerd”) for sharing his wisdom about the defunct Troy Railroad, and to our sponsors who made last night’s free walk possible: , , and

We can’t wait for our next community walk in June in Albany! More details to come.
