Calling adults with a disability in BC, MB, ON, and NS!📢 We’re sharing an important new study from the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights and the University of Winnipeg.

If you have a disability, chronic condition, or access need that affects your housing or daily life, they want to hear from you. The goal is to better understand the housing barriers and discrimination people with disabilities face across Canada.

Participants can enter a draw for one of 20 $50 gift cards.

Have you been pregnant in the past 5 years? Do you have a physical disability? The University of Alberta would love your input!

They’re recruiting people with a physical disability to take part in a research study on health and physical activity during pregnancy. By sharing your experiences, you’ll help them better understand how exercise during pregnancy looks across diverse physical abilities and how exercise may relate to different health outcomes.

Creating Accessible Outdoor Spaces

Results from this survey will help guide the development of the Accessible Outdoor Spaces Standard Regulation. This new accessibility standard will aim to create a path for accessible, barrier-free and inclusive outdoor spaces. It will use the principles of universal accessibility to build a Manitoba that is accessible to everyone.

The standard will outline a framework to identify, prevent and remove barriers. It will set minimum technical requirements to guide the design and construction of exterior environments and modifications to existing outdoor constructed spaces. It is not intended to limit the creativity of the design process during planning, construction or maintenance of public infrastructure, but to ensure accessibility remains a top priority.

Rolling Forward: Aging Well with SCI — Technology, Mobility, and Independence

As people with spinal cord injury age, staying independent takes planning. Everyday smart technology and the right wheelchair setup can both make a big difference. This webinar will show how using both smart technology and the right mobility equipment can make it easier to stay safe, independent, and comfortable at home as you age.

This session will share practical tips to help people with SCI stay safe, independent, and confident as they age.

The Social Club's inaugural outing, to The Leaf at Assiniboine Park & Zoo, went very well on March 17, despite miserable weather conditions. Pictured below are a few of the SCI Manitoba members who attended: (L-R) Randy, Todd, and Ahmed, together with Alina, rehabilitation counsellor.

The Social Club is open to all SCI Manitoba members and provides a unique opportunity to share, laugh, connect, and learn. National Indigenous Veterans Day is recognized annually in Canada on November 8 as an important day of remembrance that honours the contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit men and women who participated in Canada’s military efforts, serving in every conflict including the War of 1812, First World War, Second World War, the Korean War, and in Afghanistan. Indigenous Peoples have consistently defended Canada and fought for freedom and democracy abroad even while being denied these values at home. And upon their return to Canada, Indigenous veterans were also denied the same benefits and respect afforded to non-Indigenous veterans. This day acknowledges those injustices and commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by so many who fought for the rights and freedoms of others.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Statistics Canada, more than 30% of Indigenous Canadians aged 15 years and over experience a disability compared with 22% of all Canadians. In Manitoba, one in four individuals who sustain a spinal cord injury is Indigenous.

Each November, SCI Manitoba recognizes Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAM) as an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the many barriers Indigenous Canadians with a disability face, and to join with others by adding our collective voice to demand change that fully respects the history, traditions, and diverse needs of Indigenous Peoples living with a disability.
