Thank you to the amazing volunteers who braved the weather yesterday to bring in a huge harvest at the County Garden! Our plot at the County Garden, which we co-manage with University of Maine Cooperative Extension Waldo County, just keeps giving. Volunteers also prepped garlic cloves from this August's 1-acre garlic glean for fall planting. That means we'll have more garlic to share with the community in 2027. Join this conversation on Sunday at the Common Ground Country Fair to explore how to elevate food sovereignty in your community, from protecting your right to plant your own seeds to creating a fair marketplace that allows both small and large farms to thrive! The talk will be led by our amazing partner Maine Network of Community Food Councils.

Thank you United Midcoast Charities for awarding WCB with a $20,000 grant to improve access to locally grown food! UMC's meaningful support does so much good in our community: This funding will help WCB deliver over 9,000 pounds of produce grown by local farms to food pantries and other entities working to improve local food security.

Visit us at Northportpalooza this Sunday (9/20) to learn more about our hunger relief programming and how you can get involved, from Growing A Row for your local Give & Take stand to volunteering for gleaning events. This fun day will also involve goats, a bouncy-house, touch-a-truck, hot dogs, cotton candy, and other local non-profits and vendors. It all takes place at the Town of Northport, Maine town office, from 2-4pm, on 9/20. Thank you to Peggy Smith for choosing Waldo County Bounty as the beneficiary of the Connecting Without Agreeing training in Belfast on 9/26. Peggy is a certified trainer with the International Center for Nonviolent Communication, and this interactive 3 hour in-person training is rooted in the principles and consciousness of Nonviolent Communication, the body of work developed by Marshall Rosenberg, PhD. It will combine teaching, whole group activities, and small group practices to assist you in seeing potentially contentious conversations in a whole new way—which certainly seems apt these days! WCB is looking for more volunteers to help out at our Give & Take site in Palermo. Volunteering is a meaningful way to improve local food security, and we have two roles available:

Volunteers - drive from Palermo to UMaine Extension in Belfast, collect produce for Palermo, and check on the stand occasionally

Site Coordinator - joins a WhatsApp group chat where we post about available produce; organizes drivers to and from Extension to collect that produce

The results are in: Together we harvested 3100 pounds of garlic at the massive two-day garlic gleaning in August! Over 75 volunteers came out to make this possible, as well as other gleaning organizations committed to improving food security around the state. WCB can now provide regular distributions of garlic to all Waldo County food pantries and soup kitchens for several months! Want to pitch in?
