What a fantastic program to help more people connect with locally grown food! If you are a Maine resident over 60 and meet the income guidelines listed below, you can get $50 worth of locally grown veggies for free at the Belfast Farmers' Market (among others) through the Maine Senior FarmShare program. Don't miss this opportunity – benefitting both farmers and older Maine residents! The Give & Take season began early this year, and free produce stands are already up and running in Monroe, Waldo, Lincolnville Center, Swanville, Belfast (UU Church location), Stockton Springs, Belmont, Brooks, Northport, and Frankfort. Please use these stands to fill your tables with locally grown produce, and keep on the lookout for vegetable seedlings coming soon. You do not have to give anything to take the delicious and healthy fruits and veggies. Find locations, hours, and more about the Give & Take program here (we will update the full list of 2026 locations soon; for now, only the stands listed above are confirmed open): https://waldocountybounty.org/give-and-take-tables

Calling volunteers to lend us a hand at our garden plot at the County Garden in Swanville this Tuesday, May 26th, from 9am-noon! Over at the County Community Garden, we have beds prepped and fertilized, plastic laid, and bales of straw in place. We need help spreading and fluffing the straw in the pathways, laying some landscape fabric, and possibly even potting up some seedlings, if we have enough people.

The weather looks much nicer than last week for being outdoors - sunny and low 70's. If you can make it, please join us! You can ind us behind the EMA office and park on either side of the building.

Where: 685 Swan Lake Ave. Swanville, ME (Waldo EMA)
When: Tuesday May 26, 9-12(ish)
What to bring: Mallets would be handy again as well as a measuring tape. Also bring a hat or sunscreen, water, closed toed shoes. Maybe a flat rake for spreading straw.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out to [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

Thank you to WABI TV5 for shining a light on our partnership with the JACKSON FOOD PANTRY INFO and other local food pantries to help more people access local produce and grown more of their own food. After the tragedy of the Robbins Lumber fire, positive stories like these remind us that we live in a community of neighbors who look out for one another here in Waldo County.

The Jackson Food Pantry operates out of the Jackson Community Center with help from 35 volunteers who show up regardless of weather conditions.

These gorgeous organic seedlings are headed to food pantries and soup kitchens across Waldo County! This year, the WCB Seedling-to-Pantry program bought 294 flats of popular vegetable seedlings from Villageside Farm to distribute to food pantry clients, empowering more people to grow more of their own food for themselves and their neighbors. Like last year, the seedling selection is based on surveys from local food pantries, ensuring their clients get the varieties they want. Thank you to Villageside and all of the volunteers helping out with this effort!

Please join us in welcoming our new Program Manager, Katie Kleinle! Katie will serve as WCB's boots-on-the-ground, coordinating our amazing crew of volunteers and managing the Give & Take, Gleaning, Seedling-to-Pantry, and Farm-to-Pantry programs. Katie joins Waldo County Bounty after several years spent building a career across agriculture, including work in plant breeding, Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), and dairy farming. Her experience in both R+D and production agriculture, combined with several years volunteering in the food-justice space, have given her a passion for optimizing systems of agriculture and food distribution. A Waldo County resident since moving here from Ireland last year, Katie is excited to give back to her community as Programs Manager for Waldo County Bounty!

We are so excited to have Katie join our team - you'll see her out in the field!
