Suellen Fowler, longtime Studio friend and instructor, returned to teach flameworking this summer—this year with a meaningful addition.

Her students had the opportunity to visit ‘Tough Stuff: Women in the American Glass Studio,’ our new exhibition at Corning Museum of Glass, where Suellen’s work and story are featured.

Together, they connected firsthand with the history Suellen helped shape. It was a powerful reminder that the story of the Studio Glass Movement is richer, more complex, and more complete when the voices of women in glass are fully seen, heard, and recognized.

We’re deeply grateful to Suellen for the lasting impact she continues to make at The Studio as an instructor, and for her place in this history—one that will inspire generations of artists to come. ✨

Last week, we hosted a one-week intensive led by Resident Advisor Bill Gudenrath, bringing together students from a range of backgrounds to learn, make, and build community through Venetian-style glassblowing.

Throughout the week, Bill—alongside his TA, Johno Landsman—guided the group through close demonstrations and hands-on instruction, helping students develop a strong foundation in essential Venetian techniques, from forming vessel bodies to shaping elegant necks and delicate mereses.

The experience was shaped as much by shared making as by individual progress, with learning unfolding collectively at the bench!

From their residency at The Studio to the powerful B-Team performance at the GAS Conference, it was an unforgettable start to summer with Deborah Czeresko 🌟

While developing new work for their “Big Fruit” series, Deborah moved between the hot shop, Museum galleries, the Rakow Research Library, the Shops, and conversations with curators, artists, staff, and visitors. Each space offered them a different perspective on glass—as material, history, culture, commerce, and a living artistic language. It was a powerful reminder that making doesn’t happen in isolation, but through dialogue, research, observation, generosity, and shared curiosity.

“My time as an Artist-in-Residence was far more than studio time in a seamlessly run, fabulously equipped glass shop. It was an opportunity to immerse myself in a community and institution where glass history, innovation, scholarship, and making exist in active conversation with the present. The fruits I was making became part of a larger conversation about collections, craft, value, representation, and the stories objects carry. I leave Corning with new work, new questions, meaningful connections, and a renewed appreciation for the ways institutions, collections, and creative communities can deepen and expand an artist’s practice.” -Deborah

We’re excited to welcome our two David Whitehouse Research Residents to The Studio this week! 🌟

Bailey Donovan (), based in Canberra, Australia, will use the Rakow Research Library and Museum collections to study the relationship between Venetian glass and Burano lace. His work examines how these intertwined traditions reveal histories of gendered labor and domestic ornament. This residency will support both his academic research and studio practice, expanding his understanding of how textile and glass traditions communicate identity and care through pattern, repetition, and craft.

Alpesh Kantilal Patel () is an Associate Professor of Global Contemporary Art at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University. During his residency, he will draw upon key works in the Museum’s collections and engage with librarians, curators, scholars, and artists—deepening his research and shaping his ideas. This time will also provide dedicated space for writing his book.

The Studio is busy! 🤭 While the Casting Symposium is underway at the Casting Center, our pre-GAS Conference classes are also in full swing!  This week, Seattle-based glass artist is teaching a special 3-day class. During his demonstration today, Jason showed students how to create a glass yo-yo, incorporating a range of techniques including cane pulling, cane roll-up, and reticello. 🪀  The piece was transferred multiple times throughout the process, allowing three bubbles to be carefully opened, shaped, and refined into the form of a yo-yo. It’s a complex process that combines technical precision with playful design—and the results were incredible to watch! 👏👏👏

Kit Paulson began working with glass in 2001, creating work that explores fragility, delicacy, and intricate detail. During her recent residency at The Studio, that exploration expanded into an intensive investigation of material and process through waterjet cutting.

“The residency was so wonderful, I don’t even know what to say about it. I didn’t expect it to turn into a material/process research residency but that is exactly what it ended up being. I spent a lot of time hypothesizing, identifying variables, and then testing those variables. I also learned a tremendous amount about waterjet cutting and I’m so grateful for the chance to spend all that time determining both the possibilities and the limitations of that process.”

It was an honor to support this kind of focused experimentation—we’re excited to see where Kit takes this research next!

Thank you to everyone who spent Sunday with us celebrating The Studio’s 30th birthday! 🎉 It meant so much to share this milestone together. Seeing so many artists, makers, friends, and families gathered here was a powerful reminder of what makes The Studio so special.

We were thrilled to debut our new show in The Burke Room, ‘The Studio at 30: Shaping the Future of Glass Since 1996.’ It will be on view through February 14, 2027, so there’s still plenty of time to spend with the work and stories inside.

Throughout the year, we’ll keep the celebrations rolling with special Make Your Own Glass projects and film screenings at the Ackerman Family Theater, all inspired by the creativity and energy that have shaped The Studio over the past three decades.

We’re deeply grateful for this community—for your curiosity, your creativity, and the life you bring into this space. 🌟 Here’s to 30 years of glass and to what’s next!

We’re already missing .anne.hooper at The Studio! 🥹🪸🌅

During her residency, Holly explored layered color to evoke moments like sunrise and sunset, while developing repeating fractal patterns inspired by British folklore. These investigations grew into new large-scale, wall-based compositions that pushed her practice in exciting directions!

“I had the most incredible time at The Studio. The whole team went above and beyond to support what I was trying to do, and that mixed with world-class facilities gave me the tools to really experiment and try and push my practice in to new and unexpected directions!”

We’re so grateful to play a part in Holly’s journey and can’t wait to see what she does next!
