Description of Study

We are investigating ways that mixed-heritage individuals (e.g. hafu, mikkusu) emotionally process, cope with, and disarm

microaggressions they have experienced in Japan. Microaggressions are subtle forms of discrimination that are often unintentional. If you identify as having mixed-heritage and are willing to share your experiences, please consider participating in this research to further our understanding of how to better support racial minorities in Japan.

Participation involves a 30-75 minute online survey using Qualtrics and you will be entered into a raffle to win ¥5,000 (12 winners total).

Deadline for first raffle: May 31, 2025

Congratulations to Sophia Fukushima on her award winning essay! Great to see young hafu women putting out experiences into words for others to understand👏🏼

YUKUHASHI, Fukuoka Prefecture--Sophia Fukushima thought she was “rather bad” at writing essays, but last summer she decided to put into words something that has bothered her for most of her young life.

If the community you need doesn’t exist, create it.

That’s how Hafu Ladies began in the fall of 2018 by Nina Cataldo.

“Hafu” is a term used to describe half-Japanese people, but now the community welcomes all mixed Japanese individuals of diverse backgrounds.

Several hafu communities already existed, but none that created a safe space for women only. What started out as one hafu lady’s dream, has now expanded to a sisterhood community of nearly 800 women worldwide.

Hafu Ladies is an organization that strives to educate ourselves and others outside of our community, to embrace our diverse identities, and to live empowered lives.
