Lesson for today. God protects us from harm many times without us even being aware of the danger we face. We read in Acts 23:12-And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

13 And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

14 And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

15 Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

16 And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

18 So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

20 And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

21 But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

23 And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

24 And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor."

Paul had no idea these men had made this pact, but God knew and delivered him from harm.

Lesson for today. Every Christian should have a testimony of when they got saved. We read Paul's testimony in Acts 22:6-16 "And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus. And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard. And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord." Though everyone's salvation experience will differ and may not be as dramatic as Paul's, each of us should remember the time we trusted Jesus and asked him to forgive our sins and save us. No one is born being a Christian. There has to be a moment in our lives that we accepted him as our Savior or we have not been saved yet.

Lesson for today. It is time God's people turn from sin. Way too often we want to ask God to bless our nation, yet we are not willing to turn from our wickedness. Proverbs 14:34 says " Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." We are reminded in 2 Chronicles 7:14 ""If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." We don't mind humbling ourselves, praying and seeking God's face, but too often refuse the part where it says 'and turn from their wicked ways." If we can ever expect God to bless our nation, we must stop accepting and promoting that which blatantly contradicts his word.

When your time on earth is done, will you be able to say along with the Apostle Paul " I am pure from the blood of all men or will you regret that you never shared the Gospel ." Acts 20:26-27 says "Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God."

Lesson for today. The Bible teaches we are to seek knowledge and instructions from God's word. Every morning before we read the Bible ,we repeat this little saying" I believe the bible is the Word of God. Every word of it is true. I will receive it gladly. If what the Bible says differs from my thinking and practice, with God's help, I'll change." Proverbs 12:1 says "Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish." When the word of God teaches us something , we need to change our lives to line up with God's word. Too many Christians seem to harden their hearts and justify their way of life rather than make changes, but Proverbs 21:2 says "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts"

Lesson for today. It is our job to preach the Gospel and try to get folks saved. However it is not our job to convince anyone to get saved. That is the job of the Holy Spirit. Acts 18:5-6 says "And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean; from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles." I am not saying we should not pray for our friends and loved ones to be saved, but once we present the Gospel of Salvation, what they do with it is on them.

Lesson for today. God's people ought to be sharing Jesus with the unsaved to the point the world feels we are turning it upside down. When Paul and Silas were preaching at Thessalonica, the unbelievers were not happy. Acts 17:1-6 says "Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;" If the unbelievers like us, we are probably being to quiet about Jesus and the Word of God.

Lesson for today. Sometimes we need to do things just so that others are not offended, not because it is necessary for Salvation, but that we not offend people to the point they will not hear our message. We see in Acts 16:1-3 Paul had Timotheus circumcised ,not because it was necessary, but because the Jews would have had tried to make something out of him not being circumcised since he was a Greek. "Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek." Folks we cannot reach those we cannot get us to listen to us as we present the Gospel.

Lesson for today. People will always try to add to Salvation. Salvation is a free gift and requires nothing else we can do accept having faith and trusting Jesus' life, death, burial and resurrection as payment for our sin and accepting the free gift of Salvation. In Acts 15:1 we see "And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved." In Paul's day it was circumcision. In our days it is works, good deeds, living a certain lifestyle, etc. I am amazed at some of the things folks want to add to Salvation. I was recently told that if I celebrate Halloween and participate in handing out goodies to the kids, I cannot be a Christian, I thank God that their opinion has no bearing on my Salvation. I just received my little prayer cards with miniature Jesus dolls, bracelets with Scriptures on them and Halloween pencils that we will be handing out along with a little candy to the Trick or Treaters. Remember if someone preaches anything other than faith in Jesus is required to be saved, flee from them as they are false teachers. Matthew 15:9 warns us of them "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

Lesson for today. We must be careful not to get caught up in worshipping or praising the folks who preach the Gospel and lead us as pastors and spiritual leaders. We have to remember they are sinners just like us, saved by the grace of God. Paul and Barnabas had to remind the people at Lystra in Acts 14:15-18 "Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them." It can become easy to put a leader on a pedestal but God reminds us that he is a jealous God and the only one worthy of praise.
