Indian Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (IAPPD), a member of AFPPD, held the standing committee meeting on "Early Marriages & Mental Well-being: Implications for Adolescents and Parents (A Policy Concern)” in New Delhi, India.
It was said that early marriage continues to pose a serious challenge to India’s social and developmental landscape, with far-reaching implications for adolescents, families, and society. Despite notable progress in reducing its prevalence, a significant number of young people—particularly girls—still enter marriage before attaining physical, emotional, and economic maturity. This disrupts education, limits future opportunities, and exposes them to adverse health and psychological outcomes.
The meeting was attended by several parliamentarians cutting across party lines. Their active participation and guidance play a significant role in fostering informed policy discourse and strengthening the effective implementation of programs addressing the critical issues of early marriages and mental well-being, particularly their implications for adolescents and parents.
Key Recommendations made are on 1) Policy and Legal Measures, 2) Mental Health and Support, 3) Education and Empowerment, 4) Community Engagement, 5) Governance and Monitoring, 6) Targeted Interventions
