The Urban Appalachian Community Coalition (UACC) is an alliance of individuals and organizations committed to the well-being of Appalachian people, communities and cultural expression in the greater Cincinnati area. The Urban Appalachian Community Coalition was founded by members of the former Urban Appalachian Council, which incorporated in 1974 to “promote a decent quality of life for Appalachian citizens of Greater Cincinnati.” While many of the social services the Urban Appalachian Council provided were absorbed into other local organizations when it closed in 2014, its numerous supporters immediately recognized the continued need for Appalachian voices to have a “home” in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Over Labor Day weekend, UACC Place Keepers gathered for an evening bonfire filled with stories, homemade food, a jam session, spontaneous poetry, and plenty of creative renewal.

The table was overflowing with delicious contributions: West African Peanut Stew, Late Summer Lentil Chili, homemade pawpaw bread, local sourdough from Allez bakers, delicious dips and spreads, a “secret recipe” guacamole, and so much more.

And the hit of the evening? A special rendition of plum tart made by longtime UACC Core member Jeff Dey.

Other unique contributions included Anna Barnes’ homemade lemon balm and sweet grass syrup—perfect for tea, lemonade, or just about any beverage—and homemade apple butter crafted by Claire Sketch, Jenna Cieslak, and Dan Cieslak.

In true UACC spirit, we also celebrated intergenerational friendship: our eldest bonfire attendee embraced his 80s, while our youngest attendee was enjoying his very first year of life.

A beautiful evening of food, creativity, friendship, and renewal. Here’s to the many generations that make our UACC community what it is!

What can a farmers’ market teach us about home?

UACC Place Keepers director Sherry Cook Stanforth reflects on the program's first-ever booth at the Covington Farmers’ Market—a morning filled with Appalachian foodways, music, art, storytelling, and plenty of conversation.

From family recipes and cast-iron cooking memories to Appalachian dulcimer music and Cheryl Freeman’s whimsical “people-as-produce” portraits, the day became an opportunity for people to share where they come from and discover connections with one another.

Think of this as “Appalachia 101.”

In this blog post, Anna Barnes provides an accessible introduction to Appalachian geography, notable people, traditions, music, and common misconceptions about the region. Drawing from her own research, genealogical discoveries, travels, and experiences exploring Appalachian traditions, Anna reflects on what she learned and invites readers to continue exploring the region’s diverse histories and cultures.

Jamboree & Brews takes place on September 18 at the Carnegie Center of Columbia Tusculum, featuring Tangled Roots, Raison D'Etre, and Ma Crow & Company.

The evening will include live music, local craft b**r, ginger b**r, root b**r, and snacks, with three bands coming together in the spirit of musical friendship and community connection.

Last month, our seasonal Place Keepers Wide Open Mic and featured artist performances at Roebling Books & Coffee brought together an evening of energy, humor, storytelling, and memories of home.

Willie Davis, winner of the 2025 James Baker Hall Foundation Book Award, shared a dramatic reading from his new novel, "Honeysuckle Season," set in Hazard, Kentucky.

Ma Crow reflected on growing up in Scott County, Tennessee, Appalachian stereotypes, and her experience leaving the mountains, sharing both an essay and songs from her Cammy Award-winning November CD.

UACC Place Keeper Michael Thompson shared narrative poetry and highlighted visual storytelling projects he is developing throughout Cincinnati. Thompson’s community-based creative work has earned honors including the Forbes 30 Under 30 and an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award.

This fall, we’re celebrating new work from Pauletta Hansel and Omope Carter-Daboiku, two incredible urban Appalachian voices!

Our latest blog post feature highlights Hansel's forthcoming book, "Understory: A Women’s History of Appalachia," and includes a featured Q&A about her family history, Appalachian women and the stories that have too often remained hidden.

We also revisit a recent Q&A with Omope Carter-Daboiku, whose poetry and prose will appear in "Black Appalachia: Race, Place, and Identity," coming September 22 from University Press of Kentucky. Her work explores race, place, identity, Black joy, and what it means to be deeply rooted in Appalachia.

There will never be another Dolly Parton. 💔 But for so many Appalachians and urban Appalachians, her spirit lives on in the people she inspired—the people who taught us to dream big, stay humble, make do with what we have, take care of our people, and always leave room for a little laughter.
