Lastly, we will be highlighting Megan Kong, MMT, LPMT, MT-BC for our APIDA Heritage Month Research!

Biography: Megan Kong, MMT, LPMT, MT-BC is a Chinese American music therapist located in Maryland. She has extensive experience developing and implementing music therapy programs for children and adolescents facing mental health and neurodevelopmental challenges, with a strong focus on social justice and multicultural practices. In addition to providing remote services to marginalized people and supervision for music therapists through her own practice, Megan also works with students across multiple school systems, using music to foster social-emotional growth and academic development. She is passionate about empowering individuals through music.

Next we are featuring Ming Yuan Low, PhD, MT-BC; Sheen Tse Kuek Ser, BMUS, MT-BC; Gurpreet Kaur Kalsi, PGDip, MT, HCPC!

Ming Yuan Low, Sheen Tse Kuek Ser, and Gurpreet Kaur Kalsi are three Malaysian music therapists of who collaborated on this article. The writing took place across time zones, over whatsapp communications, on a google doc during the COVID-19 Pandemic lockdown.

Continuing our celebration of music therapy researchers during APIDA Month, we are higlighting Gabrielle Banzon, MA, MT-BC!

Biography:
Gabrielle Banzon (she, her), MA, LPMT, MT-BC is a Filipino-American music therapist working from Georgia in remote telehealth settings. She is also a PhD student exploring the intersection of music therapy, technology, and public health.

Our next music therapy researcher for APIDA Month is Livia Umeda, MT-BC!

Biography:
Livia Umeda is a Board-Certified Music Therapist based in San Francisco, California, in the United States of America. She obtained a BM in Music Therapy from the University of the Pacific in 2021. She is currently an MA Candidate in The University of Iowa’s MA in Music Therapy degree program and San Francisco State University’s MA in Education degree program (with a specialization in Disability Justice). She is the co-founder of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Music Therapy Spot, which seeks to break down existing paywalls and provide resources to budding music therapists.

Happy APIDA Month! For this month, we want to highlight the work that APIDA music therapy researchers do! Our first highlight is Megan Chiu, MMT, MT-BC!

Biography:
Megan Chiu, MMT, MT-BC is a board-certified music therapist at Baylor All Saints Medical Center, where she serves patients in the oncology unit and palliative care. She earned her Master’s degree in Music Therapy in December 2023, completing a thesis titled “Asian and Asian American Music Therapists’ Experiences with Racism, Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Microaggressions: A Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Study.” Outside of work, Megan enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and dog. A self-proclaimed foodie, she loves exploring new restaurants and discovering unique matcha spots.
