What if hope and optimism were the primary drivers for global species recovery?

In the article 'Hope in Action: How the World Species Congress Mobilised Species Recovery Action in the conservation community', published last year in the joint WAZA and IZE publication, Megan Joyce and Jenny Gray explore how the inaugural World Species Congress mobilised the conservation community.

Organised by Reverse the Red in May 2024 as a 24-hour virtual event, the Congress engaged over 110,000 participants worldwide, shifting the professional narrative towards a mindset of agency and possibility.

Rooted in behavioural science, the Congress demonstrated that hope is a practical necessity for long term commitment and action. This approach empowered professionals to influence outcomes, resulting in more than 13,000 direct conservation actions and thousands of public Species Pledges.

Green and golden bell frogs have come back to the ACT, more than 40 years after they became locally extinct. 🐸

Last week University of Canberra scientists released 25 frogs at Mawson Ponds in Canberra, as part of efforts to return the species to the region after they vanished due to chytrid fungal disease.

To help the frogs and their future offspring survive and thrive, the scientists have immunised the released frogs against chytrid and constructed artificial “saunas” and “salty water spas”. As the disease does not tolerate heat or salinity, access to these structures may help frogs in the wild combat the disease better.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this exciting work – it is a hop-ful step forward for this threatened species. My team and I wish the frogs all the best in their new home.

We’re celebrating Reverse the Red Day with .the.red. Through BGCI and the Global Tree Specialist Groups’ Global Tree Assessment project 85% of the world’s trees have now been assessed for the IUCN Red List. Assessing species is part of the ‘Assess-Plan-Act’ cycle and is important in identifying those species that are most at risk, so conversation planning and action can be targeted where it is needed most.

Involving more than 1,000 experts worldwide, the Global Tree Assessment is the largest global assessment project to date. Many Global Tree Specialist Group members are continuing to work to protect threatened trees by now contributing to planning and action.

Today is Day, which highlights the global movement to ensure the survival of wild species and ecosystems and reverse biodiversity loss. The Los Angeles Zoo is saving species both here in L.A. and around the world. This work is possible thanks to the guests and members who visit the Zoo, incredible donors who support this work, and through important partnerships with organizations and communities.

The L.A. Zoo is working to Reverse the Red with species such as the California condor and southern mountain yellow-legged frog here in southern California, peninsular pronghorn in Mexico, Grauer’s gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indian gharials in northern India, and the mountain tapir in Colombia.

More information on the conservation work of the L.A. Zoo can be found at https://lazoo.org/save-wildlife/. For more information on Reverse the Red, visit http://www.reversethered.org.
