First Nations self-determination can look like backing communities to lead, trusting their knowledge, and moving resources in ways that strengthen the work already happening on the ground.

On day two of the Philanthropy Australia conference, FNF was joined by Pertame School and Our Island Our Home to talk about the intersection of funding and self-determination. Massive thanks to Roxy Moore at the Foundation For Young Australians for providing the platform, and Just Futures for being a part of the yarn.

Today is National Sorry Day.

Twenty-nine years on from the Bringing Them Home report, and nineteen years since Rudd’s National Apology, more First Nations children are being taken from their families today, than at any point in history.

There are over 22,000 First Nations children living in out-of-home-care - representing 40% of children in the system.

These are not just statistics, they are someone’s children, and our communities future.

The measure of an apology is what comes next. Saying sorry means you don’t do it again.⁠

We remember the Stolen Generations, we honour the mothers and fathers who never stopped looking, and the survivors and their families who live with this every day.

We are with you.

Our partner Pertame School is growing the next generation of fluent Pertame speakers.

Their Language Nest Immersion Playgroup brings children from birth to five years old into a space entirely surrounded by Pertame language, where mothers and Elders learn to speak language alongside their children.

By 2030, their goal is to build an independent, community-controlled school from kindergarten to Year 3, so children can remain in immersion education and maintain Pertame language as they grow older.

We are so honoured to stand alongside The Pertame School in this work.

Thanks to the , our Executive Director, Barbie-Lee Kirby, and Manager of Operations & Governance, Sapphire Dawson, joined more than 6,000 delegates at Women Deliver 2026.

Across the week, we engaged in powerful conversations on economic justice, climate resilience, and First Nations self-determination, connecting with global changemakers committed to shifting systems and power.

We left inspired by the strength of women leading change in communities across the world.
