🌎 Our message to the secretariat of the International Conference on Biodiversity Conservation (CBD-COP15).

In November, Egypt hosted another Climate Conference of the Parties (COP27), unsuccessfully trying to make new steps to slow down climate change. And on Monday in Montreal, Canada, the Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity Conservation (CBD-COP15) has ended. We had the opportunity to attend both events, but after thinking carefully, we decided that this year we’ll better to postpone my participation for many reasons. However, we sent to the conference secretariat our recommendations on global environmental issues in order to prepare for serious work on these topics on next year. Full text by Kristian R. below.

“As a founder and CEO of Baigali, I support most of the declared goals of COP15 and actual conservation strategies, like preservation of 30 percent of the natural territories. I support initiatives for making business greener while resisting greenwashing and supporting civil society and human rights. But these measures are not enough, so Baigali has three observations relating to biodiversity.

Firstly, overconsumption remains ignored by these international conventions. Until we change the global consumption “culture”, all of our work in biodiversity conservation and preservation of nature will be in vain. Overconsumption drives the demand for natural resources and produces more and more waste. We can continue trying to make the global market “greener”, but without addressing consumption a lot of our efforts will be wasted. Sustainable development, declared by the United Nations as a way for a better future is not a panacea. It’s been 50 years since the legendary report on “Limits to growth” (1972), and now, rethinking the report, we clearly understand that growth is a problem by itself.
Spending our efforts on managing global environmental issues without changing anything to decrease overconsumption will bring us to a dead end. Overconsumption and uncontrolled growth will continue to produce global and local environmental problems, will continue to destroy our planet’s biodiversity and will speed the climate change. I’d like to see the inclusion of the problem of overconsumption and overgrowth of the global market and development of strategies for solving this problem to the plan for the next Convention. There should be an intersectional working group on this topic.

Secondly, the theory of a biotic pump, developed by the scientist Dr. Victor Goshkov from Russian Federation, was recently confirmed by Dr. Antonio Donato Nobre, a scientist from Brazil. More scientists from different countries are adding to research on biotic regulation. We don’t think the theory is “controversial” any more. The role of biotic regulation could be very important both for slowing the climate change and for biodiversity conservation. And the potential of this natural mechanism could be no less important, than limiting greenhouse gas emissions. We want COP and CBD secretariats to commission research into the theory of biotic regulation and create an intersectional working group to start to create new conservation strategies, based on new data.

Thirdly, as an environmental specialist, who worked with scientists, nonprofit leaders, leaders of civil societies and government officials in few countries, I’ve combined my ideas, my data and experience and actually creating new global tool for preservation nature territories around the world. I will announce brief of my conception very soon, so I will be appreciated the COP and CBD secretariats to keep in touch on this topic.”

The November COP27 Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt was unsuccessful in achieving meaningful progress in resisting climate change. This week, COP15 wrapped up in Montreal, Canada, with an agreement for a global framework on biodiversity for the next decade. As founder and CEO of Baigali, I suppo...
