Is more or less shade needed? 🌿

That's the question coaches and farmers in the Cocoa Horizons Program discuss together.

Too little shade exposes cocoa trees to heat stress and drought.
Too much shade reduces airflow, increases humidity and can lead to pests & diseases.

That's why shade management is so important. By carefully managing the number and placement of shade trees, farmers create the right conditions for cocoa production while supporting biodiversity and improving climate resilience. 🌱

What does it really take to grow cocoa? 🌱

It's easy to think cocoa farming is about planting trees, waiting and harvesting.

The reality is very different.

Every day brings new decisions about pests and diseases, shade or soil health. It's about finding the balance between practices that will help today's harvest without compromising tomorrow's.

Years of knowledge and experience is behind the Cocoa Horizons Foundation to support cocoa farming communities to find this delicate balance.

Spending time with cocoa farmers is an unforgetable experience that shows us the years of expertise and countless decisions made long before cocoa reaches factories and kitchens.🍫💚

What does it really take to grow cocoa?

Before visiting cocoa farms, many of us imagine cocoa farming as a straightforward process: plant trees, wait for them to grow and harvest the pods.

The reality couldn't be more different.

Cocoa farming is a constant balance of decisions. Farmers need to carefully manage sunlight & shade, pests, diseases, soil health, and tree productivity—all while adapting to changing weather conditions and protecting their livelihoods.

Years of knowledge and experience is behind the Cocoa Horizons Foundation to support cocoa farming communities to find this delicate balance.

🍫 Every chocolate creation begins long before it reaches the kitchen.

It starts with cocoa farmers, who care for their trees and harvest each pod by hand. From there, cocoa embarks on a journey - from origin to chocolate, and ultimately into the hands of chefs and artisans who transform it into moments of indulgence.

Through its long-standing support of the Cocoa Horizons Foundation, Callebaut helps invest in the future of cocoa by supporting farming communities and sustainable cocoa production.

From farm to kitchen, a journey we share. 🌱

"After harvest is before harvest"

There is a saying "After harvest is before harvest". Because after the mid-crop harvest, work starts for the main-harvest. Activity never stops on a cocoa farm.

In the coming months cocoa farmers will start pre-harvest work for the main season. Cocoa Horizons supports farmers before, during and after harvest, the whole year round.

From farm diagnostics and Farm Business Plans to coaching, farm maintenance support, every step is designed to help strengthen farm resilience and improve livelihoods.

🌱 A woman in a man’s world

Odile is one of the few women working as a Sustainability Area Coordinator in Cameroon. She believes that both men and women can excel in this role — and we agree with her.

Today, she coordinates sustainability activities for seven farmer groups, representing approximately 2,000 cocoa farmers, and supervises 10 sustainability officers.

The team’s work includes plantation assessments, training, plant protection treatments, tackling human rights issues, and promoting agroforestry — all to help farmers improve the productivity of their plantations 💪🏾

🌱 Fighting CSSV takes time and collaboration.

Cacao Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV) remains one of the biggest challenges for cocoa farming in West Africa. Once a tree is infected, there is no cure.

That's why it is important to investigate and support reserarch in the area. The Cocoa Horizons Foundation is supporting a pilot project in Côte d'Ivoire to explore new ways to slow CSSV spread.

We're testing practical approaches such as:
🌿 removing infected trees
🌿 planting barrier crops
🌳 replanting healthy cocoa trees
🤝 providing training and long-term field support

Collaboration and investment in research brings us forward. 🍫

🍫 Every piece of chocolate has a beginning.

For more than 10 years, has been part of the Cocoa Horizons journey towards a more sustainable cocoa sector.

Through the Cocoa Horizons Foundation, we have helped support farmer livelihoods, protect children, promote responsible farming practices and strengthen climate resilience.

Because great chocolate starts long before it reaches the kitchen.

This is the first chapter in a series exploring the journey from cocoa farm to chocolate creation. 🌱
