Vertical Drinking - what is it?

Vertical Drinking has been causing problems for years. The term refers to people who stand to drink. It often leads to faster alcohol consumption, which goes hand in hand with alcohol related crime.

Removing seats at 10:30PM will lead to approx. 1000 drinkers moving to vertical drinking in Bristol City Centre on a busy night. This will lead to more public order issues, putting more pressure on bar security, bar staff and Police.

Also - we have a new petition which is officially recognised by the council, so please sign it, every signature helps.

What's all the fuss about?

Bristol City Council are starting to enforce an 11pm curfew on any pavement seating, forcing hospitality businesses within Bristol City Centre to remove outdoor seats at this time, meaning paying customers will have to stand to be outside. This will happen city wide as we all have had an arbitrary 11pm curfew applied to our pavement licences.
This means that, going into summer, Bristol will not have any outside seating past 11pm unless it's in a beer garden. Businesses are receiving enforcement notices via email, starting with Old City and moving onto King Street next.

Hospitality needs your support, as if these license changes are enforced, jobs will be lost and businesses may have to shut. Pubs and bars rely on outdoor seating to increase capacity over summer, allowing for enough sales to stay afloat.

These restrictions come in only a year after Covid restrictions were lifted, and at a time where the industry is only just starting to recover.
