Telling people to stock up on tins without explaining why food security is under threat is just not good enough.

More than 150 experts have warned that Britain is unprepared for a food crisis, with with global heating among the major threats identified.

Yet extraordinarily, the government’s main emergency preparedness webpage does not even mention climate change (link below). Neither do its pages on heatwaves, flooding, droughts or wildfires.

How can government build public support for action on the root causes if it won’t even name them?

Leaving people to prepare for disruption, without even explaining the causes, treats a worsening crisis as something we simply have to endure.

Stockpiling tins cannot substitute for government action to protect our food system and tackle the causes of growing insecurity.

People deserve the full picture. The public will not forgive ministers for keeping them in the dark while there is still time to change course.

We can rise to this challenge but first we must face it.

Government should stage an honest emergency briefing to the nation, introduced by the Prime Minister, delivered by independent experts and backed by action at the scale and pace the risks demand.
