Gaualofa in Poutasi awaiting the arrival of Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti 🌊✨

The crew of trainee navigators from Te Kura Waka, a school dedicated to the revival of traditional Pacific celestial navigation, set sail from Tauranga 🇳🇿 to Samoa 🇼🇸 on 24 September and are anticipated to arrive on our shores tomorrow, 15 October.

The crew has been trained by master navigator Jack Thatcher to sail with nothing but the skies and non-instrumental navigation methods traditionally used by Pacific Islanders to traverse the Pacific Ocean.

We are super grateful to Kaitaia College and their ongoing collaboration with Tokanui Trust to reach more rangatahi and teach kaupapa waka.

Whangarei maritime festival is meant to empower our youth… 🤏🏾🤏🏾🤏🏾 6…7…🔝
The lineup our Rangatahi have is Knots and lashing, land drills and hoe waka, Basic navigation by the stars, Waka tours life on a voyaging canoe, Kapa and more…..
But behind the scenes, our young people are taking charge, embracing challenges and developing valuable skills through 2-hour sentry watches, learning to navigate with minimal sleep and enjoying team-building activities with singing and laughing n like showers at the pools at closing time. What started with a solid 15 has grown into a united iwi - imagine the possibilities if they could vote! And while photos are scarce, the memories and experiences gained will last a lifetime.
