A Matter of Hope This page is created for the A Matter of Hope Fundraiser in support of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. We continue to carry on the fight for him.

A Matter of Hope is honor of Matt Sgambato, a 35 year old warrior, father, friend, husband, and son. A Matter of Hope, which began in 2020, is a summer fundraising event, raising money for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation and it’s fight against Cholangiocarcinoma, or Bile Duct Cancer. CCA is a rare cancer, with low survival rates due to a lack of early detection methods and clinical trials specif

ically aimed at treatment for the disease. In a word, the A Matter of Hope community is fighting to give a voice and a presence to those battling rare cancers, who often don’t receive the attention or the funding necessary to give them more hope in this uphill battle. The event is in honor of Matthew Sgambato, a 35-year old father, son, friend, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and WARRIOR who battled Cholangicocarcinoma for about a year before the disease robbed us all of him on Christmas Eve, 2019. “Matt” was diagnosed with CCA a week after the birth of his first and only son. The diagnosis came as a shock to his family and friends, as Matt was the epitome of health and wellness. There were very few warning signs, making it difficult to get a diagnosis quickly and before the disease had advanced significantly. Throughout his battle, Matt often asked why this happened to him. How were there no warning signs? What did he do wrong? He’d ask this to his doctors who often answered, “There was no way of knowing. You didn’t do anything wrong. Unfortunately this cancer is difficult to diagnose early and there aren’t a lot of treatments directly focused on this cancer.” They’d often tell Matt that his health outside the cancer would be a tremendous asset to him. This is not an acceptable answer. Matt fought with fire and rage throughout this battle, and his community will continue to fight for him. Prompted by his legacy of determination, we will not rest until there is a cure, not only for Cholangiocarcinoma, but for all rare cancers.
