Happy anniversary Macalla 🌿

On this day in 2024, we opened the gates to the very first Macalla.

What started as an idea between a small group of like minded heads became something none of us could have fully imagined. A field full of people who left as part of the same community. Music, art, workshops, conversations, late night campfires, and a genuine sense that something special has unfolded.

Independent events are built on belief long before they’re built on budgets. They demand countless unseen hours, impossible decisions, favours, setbacks, sleepless nights, and an incredible amount of trust. Sometimes things go to plan. Sometimes they don’t.

This year hasn’t unfolded the way we hoped. Like many independent festivals, we’ve faced challenges that aren’t always visible from the outside. But if there’s one thing the last year has reminded us, it’s that Macalla was never just about one weekend.

It was about the people who showed up.

The artists who shared their gifts.

The volunteers who gave everything.

The crew who believed in an idea before anyone else did.

And every single person who danced, laughed, learned, created, and helped make that field feel like home.

To everyone who was part of that first chapter, we are eternally grateful. You created something that still echoes outward.

As we look back on our inaugural gathering, we’re reminded that some things are worth taking the time to build properly. The vision has not disappeared, it is simply searching for the right ground to grow again. Macalla’s new home is out there. We are trusting the process of finding the place where this story is meant to continue. What we are seeking is seeking us.

Thank you for all the support, the kind words, for the genuine interest in Macalla. Knowing that so many of you are waiting for the next chapter means more than you know.

Macalla was never ours alone. It belongs to everyone who helped create it.

Until then, here’s a look back at where it all began.

Here’s to the next chapter whenever and wherever it arrives.

Go dtí go mbuailfimid le chéile arís 🌿

Mar a dtagann tine le talamh, éiríonn scéalta cosúil le spréacha. Gan deifir. Gan torann. Ach teas, adhmad, agus am ag moilliú go cogar ciúin.

Fanann comharthaí oíche mhaith sna luaithreach lasta, tine a d’iompair na scéalta go dtí na huaireanta beaga.

As luaithreach an tsean, éiríonn spréacha nua i gcónaí, óir fiú na lasracha is ciúine is féidir leo leathnú chun lonrú is gile.

Is anseo a thosaíonn an pobail… timpeall na tine, ag roinnt teasa i bhfad i ndiaidh don macalla deireanach dul in éag san oíche

Where fire meets earth, stories rise like embers. No rush. No noise. Just heat, timber, and time itself slowing to a whisper.

Signs of a night well lived linger in the smouldering ashes, a fire that carried the stories ’til the wee hours.

From the ashes of what was, new sparks always rise, for even the quietest flames can spread to shine the brightest.

This is where community begins… around the fire, sharing warmth long after the last echo has faded into the night.

Samhain has passed, the veil has thinned and the mist of The Otherworld has descended. The Celtic New Year has begun and we enter the dark half of the year as this number 9 year draws to a close. The season of renewal, where old energies spiral and fall away like the last leaves on the branches to make space for new beginnings. The earth rests, and the very first sparks of new life begin their slow journey upward.

Beneath the soil, something is moving. Quietly, powerfully, purposefully… Macalla is stirring deep underground.

Thanks to the ones who’ve held faith, built with us, danced with us, healed with us and supported us all along the way since our first edition.

And to everyone who joined us for our Samhain gathering in Belfast: your presence, your fire, and your energy meant more than you know. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.

Keep your ear to the ground and your eyes peeled.

Spotsolas: MYJYN

Is leagan nua-aoiseach é Myjyn den fhocal Gaeilge ‘Maighdean’ do mermaid, ós rud é go bhfuil taithí ar a doimhneachtaí sonacha cosúil le snámh san fharraige, nádúrtha agus rúndiamhair ag an am céanna.

Tá oiliúnadh clasaiceach aici, agus sreabhann sí le guaim a bhfuil sé deacair a fheiceáil. Ní dhéanann sé seo an tsonra a bheith réamhchinnte; ar an gcontrárthacht, ligeann sé don éisteoir mothú sábháilte agus í ag iompar orainn thar a realm uisceach uathúil: ag iompú, ag síneadh agus ag caoineadh.

Spreagtha ag amhránaithe éagsúil cosúil le Moya Brennan, Ella Fitzgerald agus Joni Mitchell, tá a ton ag dul isteach i gcuimhne traidisiúnta agus comhaimseartha.

D’Eisigh sí a singil tosaigh “Dark Is The Colour” in 2024, le “Communion” ag teacht i ndiaidh, a seoladh os comhair lucht féachana díolta amach i The Cobblestone, Baile Átha Cliath.

Tá fuaim Myjyn cosúil leis an ngléas ar dhroim iasc ag an tráthnóna, le cnagadh an tsalainn ar do chulaith, le glaoch tonn a thugann tú chuig an Saol Eile.” – Molly May O’Leary, scríbhneoir agus ealaíontóir.

Spotsolas: RUAIRÍ

Is camailéan ceoil é Ruairí, DJ, táirgeoir agus ceoltóir as Béal Feirste. Eicléictiúil agus eisceachtúil, le hoidhreachtaí domhanda agus inspioráidí ó thraidisiúnaigh go teicneolaíocht go dtí na dúlra. Uaireanta spaoiúil, uaireanta polaitiúil, agus chomh seans go mbeidh sé ag seinm do na héanlaith sa choill mar a bheidh sé ag DJ-ing do phlaicíní.

Spotlight: RUAIRÍ
Ruairí is a musical chameleon, DJ, producer and musician from Belfast. Eclectic and eccentric, with pan global influences, and inspirations from trad to techno to the elemental. Sometimes playful, sometimes political, and just as likely to be found playing to the birds in the forest as djing to dancefloors.

Díreach i ndiaidh feidhmíochta dochreidte ag Troxy, Londain…

Spotsolas: RÓISÍN EL CHERIF

Is amhránaí, cumadóir amhrán agus stiúrthóir scannán ceoil Éireannach-Palaistíneach í Roisin El Cherif.

Thug sí a léiriú bánaithe den Fringe, meascán de amhráin agus físeán, go dtí an Factory an Bontáin an Aibreán seo caite mar a léiriú céad teideal uirthi.

Fuair a léiriú ag Féile a Fringe anuraidh léirmheas cúig réalta ón Irish Times ó Chian Ó Coinn, agus bhuaigh sí Duais na mBailiúchán, “An Taispeántas Cultúrtha agus Polaitiúil is Fearr”.

“Tugtar an taispeántas seo, gan fhorma nó taithí, chun scéalta daoine eile a roinnt agus pictiúir mór leathan a tharraingt den dá domhan aithníonn sí. Ceanglaítear na cultúir cheoil éagsúla go leor.”
Bhí Róisín ar scéal ó Nialler9 ag labhairt faoi a oidhreacht Arabach a ghlacadh, a nascadh le ceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann, agus paraleilí a tharraingt idir mitheolaíocht, traidisiúin bhéasa agus caoineadh na hÉireann.

I 2024, bhí Róisín ar scéal ó Shíle Seoige, “Ready to be Real”, agus léirigh sí ar The Tommy Tiernan Show ar RTÉ a hAon – agus ina dhiaidh sin scaoil sí leagan Éireannach-Arabach ar “Siúil a Rúin”.

Tá a léiriúcháin ag 02 Brixton le Paul Weller agus Primal Scream, Electric Picnic, Féile an Phobail, an Fleadh Cheoil, an Halla na Saoirse mar chomhluadar le Damien Dempsey, an Olympia agus an 3arena, áirithe go mór. Thug sí tacaíocht do Bhaedúin, Mairéad Ní Chathail, Kíla agus The Stunning, agus léirigh sí roimhe seo ag Body&Soul, an EP agus na Seisiúin Rúbaí.

Le cúlra aici sa tháirgeadh scannán, thóg Róisín stíl amhairc áirithe chun dul leis an gceol éadormhar, agus í ag tarraingt ó na réimeas eile, d’fhinscéalta agus draíocht.
Scaoileann sí a halbam céad déag, ‘Macha’, i mí Meán Fómhair.

“Lán de fhocal a bhféadfadh a chloisteáil arís agus meilidí pop nach féidir a sheachaint. Faoi bhun guth te Róisín El Cherif, tá rud níos triobhaí ann. Tá cáil thíospealach, aeráid agus... meascann El Cherif gach rud go bríomhar.”

Spotsolas: UAIMH NA GCAT

Is féidir Halloween a rianú go díreach ar uaimh amháin i gContae Roscommon, ar a dtugtar Uaimh na gCat. Ní ionann ach go bhfuil an onóir againn anseo le dhá fhear a chuireann a gcuid fuaime agus a gceannas in iúl sin.

Tá gach duine i gceist leis an gceol ón tuar go bhfuil rithim ina nádúr. Instinct príomha atá dúilte againn ó ár gcéad chroícheart. Tosaíonn an tionscadal Uaimh na gCat, inspioráilte ag baile an Mórrígna, bandia na Beatha in Éirinn, leis an aidhm ár ndúil dúchais rithme a chomhghairdeachadh trí cheol, agus onóra a thabhairt don Éirinn, a deasacht, a cultúr seanaimseartha agus a teanga.

“Méid éagsúil géinte ó théicneach dorcha agus domhain, hipnotach go dtí fuaimchlúdaigh cosúil le The Prodigy, agus meascán gan tráth spóirt de mheiteal, ceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann agus tionlacan. ‘Ceol uaimh spooky chun dia a thabhairt isteach’, mar a deir na cailíní féin.”

Halloween can be traced directly to one cave in county Roscommon called Uaimh na gCat. It’s only fitting that we are joined by two men whose sound and ethos embody that.

Everyone has an intrinsic sense of rhythm. A primal instinct ingrained in us from our first heartbeat. Uaimh na gCat, inspired by the home of the Mórrígan, an Irish Goddess of Fate, is a project started with the intention of celebrating our inherent sense of rhythm through music paying homage to Ireland, her beauty and ancient culture and language.

“An eclectic mix of genres from dark and deep hypnotic techno to prodigy adjacent sounds, blending metal and pagan and traditional Irish music influences seamlessly. “Spooky cave music for summoning deities” as the lads put it themselves””.
