Sadiq Khan, exactly the kind of politician we need - follows his instincts, sticks to his principles and faces down the culture war response which has become the new norm. How on earth can anyone think clean air for kids (and adults) is a war on motorists. Fact is our predominant form of transport does emit toxic fumes and for far too long we overlooked it - over time the sheer number of vehicles on the road, more cars than homes - made it unavoidable as an issue. We long ago controlled home smoke emissions…. The ULEZ issue is a perfect example of where the rights of people clash - on the one side the right to drive the car you have, where you want when you want. On the other side the right to breathe cleaner air, air that doesn’t make you sick. Easy choice I reckon, if we can strip away the culture war narrative. These are important issues, one persons right to eat, drive and do what they want - affects another person’s right to a planet we can live on. Take our current water crisis, it takes 1,000 litres of water to make 1 litre of cows milk, but only 50 litres of water for 1 litre of oat milk. What we choose to eat impacts everything, climate, wildlife, water and health - not just our own.

Of course we're angry. Together year on year we have all been witnessing the most immense betrayal of life imaginable. The roaring of wildfires across Europe says it all. We know what’s happening, that at massive cost, the climate and nature emergency is being wilfully underplayed and ignored by those in power.

That's why XR are coming together in our Love AND Rage to build our community and to take action on the streets.

Air pollution seriously harms (particularly) young children and is a major safeguarding issue in polluted areas. A new study shows that ULEZs (ultra-low emission zones) lead to enormous improvements in lung development in our young people. They need to be used more widely in towns and cities with poor air quality, to remove the most polluting vehicles from thee road together with improvements in electrified affordable public transport to support a just transition.

Children's lung capacity caught up with their peers in less polluted areas once a clean air zone came in, a study shows.

I’m in urban, ‘rainy’ South Wales, seeing smoke from our third wildfire this week and reading that even Merthyr bloody Tydfil (where it always rained when I was teaching there) is on fire. You might not think it, but your friends and neighbours are as (or more) worried than you about climate change and destruction of nature. We need action to deploy the solutions we have justly and faster to protect those we love.

If you don’t feel sad and angry, or if the first thing that comes into your head is ‘what about China’ or ‘1976’ or the new lie that it’s too late to do anything, you’ve been conned by rich vested interests who control (or whose mates control) lots of what you read. We have the solutions, almost everyone globally cares deeply and we can make change. This needs system change - we need to talk to one another, let others know that they’re not on their own but actually the ‘silent majority’ and *demand* action. While I know that personal transport isn’t ideal, the part of Cambridgeshire I’m driving through has limited public transport. While the wonderful iamkate.com tells me that UK electricity is being produced at only 54g/kWh, the queues for the huge rack of electric chargers at this service station shows that EV transport is being normalised and this must be an improvement on the fossil fuel alternative. We HAVE the solutions to minimise the harm to our children. We must ACT NOW.
