Charlton Firefighters Local 4023 in Massachusetts has issued a formal vote of no confidence in Chief Rob Barton, accusing him of creating a hostile work environment and engaging in harassment, retaliation and vindictive behavior. The union says a whopping 20 of the department’s 26 firefighters have left since Barton took over 21 months ago. The town administrator did confirm that 20 fire department employees separated from town service during that period but declined further comment because of an ongoing personnel matter. The union is asking the Select Board to review the allegations and high turnover.

NORTH CAROLINA LODD

A Durham, North Carolina, firefighter was killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning, October 8, while battling a large structure fire in the 400 block of Marly Drive. Two additional firefighters were injured and transported to the hospital, with both expected to survive. The investigation is on-going but initial reports indicate a possible structural collapse during firefighting operations, although the exact circumstances surrounding the death have not been officially confirmed. The fallen firefighter's identity has not yet been released. Our condolences are with the Durham Fire Department, the fallen firefighter's family, and everyone affected by this tragedy. Rest in peace, brother.

Fire departments that tolerate weak standards produce weak firefighters, officers and chiefs. This puts themselves, their fellow firefighters and their communities at risk. And pretending this isn’t happening isn’t going to fix anything.

St. George, Utah, approved a 0.33% sales tax increase after the measure initially failed and passed on a revised 3–2 vote. The tax is expected to generate $12 million a year for emergency services, funding six full time fire stations, 72 firefighters and 15 new or replacement fire apparatus to address rising call volumes and response times. The city estimates an average cost of $56 a year per resident, with primary residents receiving about $40 back through a utility credit. Supporters said the growing city needs more capacity, while opponents argued officials should find savings elsewhere before raising taxes. Either way, it’s refreshing to see a city prioritize essential services as the community grows and invest in sustaining and improving service delivery.

Londonderry, NH Fire Department Lt. Mike England is recovering after being engulfed in flames when a rapid fire event occurred during a house fire this past weekend. He suffered minor burns while searching the home because firefighters believed people might still be inside. And also sustained a broken leg during the escape. All five occupants got out safely and declined medical care. England said he feels like the “luckiest unlucky guy” given how much worse the incident could have been. Great work Lt.! We wish him a very speedy recovery!

Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Chief Dennis Rubin is stepping down after three and a half years, with his last day set for Oct. 31. Rubin initially took over after his predecessor resigned amid union tensions, but conflict surfaced again under his leadership. In April, IAFF Local 64 voted no confidence in Rubin and County Administrator David Johnston, citing concerns about leadership, decision making and firefighter safety. The union said overtime cuts left crews short staffed; officials pointed to more than $5 million in overtime savings and improvements to department programs. In August, the union sued the Unified Government, alleging firefighters were blocked from bringing staffing and safety concerns to elected officials. The government disputes the union’s position, citing limits on lobbying over contract matters.
