The Impacts of Earthquakes & Typhoons on Children as a result of widespread corruption and corporate looting of the environment
In the span of less than two months, the Filipino people endured back to back earthquakes and typhoons, from the 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Cebu in Sept to Typhoon Uwan in Nov. The Philippines once again ranks as the most disaster-prone country in the world according to the 2025 WorldRiskIndex.
Despite the consistent threat of extreme weather events and seismic hazards, corrupt politicians continue to pocket hundreds of billions of pesos, neglecting the local infrastructure and flood control projects that would protect the safety of Filipino families and children in times of disaster.
The impacts on Filipino children are devastating. Over 3 million children are affected by the earthquakes in Cebu and Davao Oriental, Typhoon Tino, and Typhoon Uwan, including 131 children who have died, 1,138 injured, and 116 missing based on current reports.
With 525,000 homes damaged and over 58,000 homes completely lost, hundreds of thousands of children and their families are currently displaced. They are in dire need of support to rebuild their lives, homes, and livelihoods. Children face disruptions to their education as over 2,000 municipalities suspended school due to the disasters.
As the Philippine government paves the way for private corporations to conduct illegal mining, quarrying, reclamation, and “development projects,” children and their families face perilous yet preventable situations during calamities. Children will require psychosocial support due to these traumatic events. No child should experience these manmade disasters.
Protect our children! Support the rebuilding of lives, homes, and livelihoods! Hold accountable corrupt politicians who are destroying our environment!
