My name is Laura and my age is 41 years.I have the disability Cerebral Palsy and I have been confined to a wheelchair all my life. I have been attending a Neuro Physio clinic and was looking for more options to improve my daily life. I found there was an operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy ). For two years I have attended appointments and assessments at The Walton Centre Hospital in L
iverpool. The operation went ahead on 6th October 2014
At the time I was one of the oldest adults in this country to have this procedure carried out in a UK hospital. The operation was successful and things have improved dramatically from what they were and I am forever grateful for the opportunity it gave me and the life changes it has brought. There is still a long way to go. It takes a long time to try and correct 3 and a half decades of damage that Cerebral Palsy and bad movement patterns have caused. I have had 3 further surgeries following SDR these were all orthopedic ones to my legs. The therapies and physio I need to continue making progress Is not funded by the NHS, so is self funded with the help of family, friends and very kind people in the local community. I see private physio's and therapists at different centres and clinics
The estimated Monthly cost of physio and different therapies is £500. This does not include he cost of any equipment to aid progression. For this reason I have set up Laura's Wish and hold regular fundraising events as well as Charity nights, raffles sales etc
This is not only to help achieve my own dream of walking or improving my mobility but also to help other people with disabilities to access treatment and equipment that is not provided by The NHS. My progress will be documented here - Things were halted somewhat with the lockdown but hoping to get back on trach again now normality is slowly resuming. I'm not asking for a lot and I am not expecting miracles. I just want to achieve some of the little things many people take for granted everyday. Please support me and follow me in my journey - Thank you.
