Catholic Cathedral College visits SENESE

Yesterday we were visited by teachers and Years 12 and 13 students of Catholic Cathedral College in Christchurch, New Zealand, who are in the country for an immersion experience and cultural exchange. After a brief introduction, they spent some time learning elei printing and sei making from our students and staff over fresh cold coconuts and mandarins. These are rare but very important opportunities to learn from and to share what we do with each other. It is not every day that groups like this visit us. Thank you to the principal, teachers and students of CCC for choosing to spend some of your precious time with us and for the gifts you have given us. May the remainder of your time in Samoa be full of exciting experiences and learning opportunities for you all.

Outreach For Sa’anapu and Lepuia’i, Manono Packed by Partnership and Service

Last week on Thursday and Friday, teams SENESE, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)Ministry of Health Samoa and Oceania University of Medicine joined together in providing health and hearing screening for the people of Sa’anapu and Lepuia’i Manono. This is part of our outreach initiative funded by the Tautua Program which focuses on bringing these initial services for our people in their respective communities. Of those attended, 67 were from Sa’anapu and Safata area while 73,including the oldest 89 years old and the youngest 2 months old were from Manono island. These people had access to general health check by OUM team under the leadership of Dr. Tapa Fidow as well as the chance to have their ears checked and hearing tested.
Those who had wax, foreign objects or ear discharge were attended to by our ENT nurses who were responsible for wax/foreign object removal and discharge suction. Those with severe permanent hearing loss were fitted with hearing aid devices on the spot. The screening became a life changing experience for some especially those who were facing certain barriers as a result of not being able to hear or finding everyday life difficult because of other health issues. For us, it was a realisation of the importance of partnership, the value of the services that we provide and the impact of such services on our people and their families. Our Manono screening was joined by His Excellency Deputy High Commissioner of Australia to Samoa, Mr. Simon Dawkins and the Honourable Speaker of the Legislative Assembly who is also the Member of Parliament for Aiga i le Tai; Auapa’au Mulipola Aloitafua.

We express our sincere gratitude to the Government of Australia for funding this initiative through the Tautua Program, making it possible for us to reach out to our people. We also acknowledge the support of Dr. Sione and his ENT team as well as Dr. Tapa and his OUM team. This partnership becomes a life changing channel for our people. Together, we serve with purpose.

Outreach - Hearing and Health Screening 🩺❗️

Senese Inclusive Education Support Services in partnership with the Ministry of Health Samoa and Oceania University of Medicine will be delivering community hearing and health screening at Sa’anapu and Manono-Tai this week 🙌🏼

The screenings will be at the following locations:

📍Thursday 18 June, 9.15am - Sa’anapu, Lesa and Alo Residence
📍Friday 19 June, 9.30am - Manono-Tai, Lepuia’i EFKS Hall

These screenings will ensure communities, especially children and those most at risk, have access to timely screening, support and referrals.

Yesterday, representatives from SENESE attended the NGO Talanoa Event with Her Excellency the Honourable Governor-General of Australia, Sam Mostyn AC. SENESE was pleased to present its core inclusive education services and comprehensive community initiatives, with particular emphasis on audiology and hearing services, to Her Excellency the Governor-General. In return, the Governor-General provided constructive guidance regarding our service delivery models, emphasizing strategic collaboration with the Tautua program to enhance sustainable funding pathways. We express gratitude and sincere thank you to the Australian High Commission and the Tautua team for inviting SENESE to be a part of this incredibly important event. We are truly honoured.
