SAO 101 Beekeeping Training Off to a Strong Start!

Today marked an exciting milestone for the Samoa Apiculture Organisation as we started our 101 Beekeeping Training under the GAFSP and the support of MAF, and what a fantastic start it has been!

Participants from across the beekeeping community came together eager to learn the fundamentals of beekeeping, hive management, and the vital role bees play in supporting our environment and food systems. The energy, curiosity, and commitment shown today reflect the growing momentum of apiculture in Samoa.

This training is part of SAO’s ongoing efforts to build local capacity, strengthen biosecurity awareness, and empower more Samoan's to participate in sustainable beekeeping, whether for livelihood or recreation.

Fa’afetai tele lava to all participants and partners who made Day 1 a success. We look forward to continuing this journey together tomorrow for Day 2 and over the next few weeks and into the rest of the year through Queen Rearing, Colony expansion and Value Added training sessions

Become part of the movement - Join SAO today we would love to hear from you.

🚨 Important Notice for Beekeepers 🚨

Last night, three hives were destroyed due to confirmed cases of American Foulbrood (AFB). Sadly, one of these hives was traced back to a feral colony extraction from a school in Aleisa.

This is a stark reminder of the serious risks involved in adding feral colonies to your apiary. While it may seem like a way to expand your hive numbers, feral colonies can carry hidden diseases like AFB that threaten not only your bees but the wider beekeeping community.

πŸ‘‰ AFB is highly contagious and fatal to bee colonies. Once detected, destruction of infected hives is the only way to prevent further spread.πŸ‘‰ Extracting feral colonies without proper testing or quarantine puts all nearby hives at risk.

We urge all beekeepers to remain vigilant, practice strict biosecurity, and avoid introducing feral colonies into managed apiaries. Protecting our bees means protecting our future. πŸπŸ’›
