We believe every child deserves to learn in a safe, inclusive, and resilient school environment.
In May, our Strengthening Resilience in Vanuatu Schools project successfully delivered two 4-day trainings on School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (SBDRR) and Education in Emergencies (EiE) from 5–8 May and 18–21 May 2026, in partnership with Ministry of Education & Training, Vanuatu .
The workshops brought together school principals, teachers, handymen, and school council representatives from 19 schools across Malekula to strengthen school preparedness and resilience. Participating schools included: Lakatoro Junior Secondary School, Collège de Norsup, Tautu Primary School, Lingarak Primary School, Vinmavis Primary School, Lamboubou School, Rensarie College, Orap School, Notre Dame School, Velow School, Saint-Thérèse School, Matanvat School, Saint-Louis School, Uripiv School, Topaen School, Neramb School, Chenard School, Wora School, and Leviamp School.
This work is possible through the support of the European Union in the Pacific through UNICEF Pacific, the training supports schools in creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments for every child.
Participants gained practical skills in:
-Hazard mapping and risk assessments
-Emergency drills and simulations
-Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)
-School grant management and preventative maintenance
-Developing School Disaster Management Plans
Having already reached schools in Shefa and Sanma provinces, this initiative now continues to strengthen resilience across Malampa Province, helping schools better prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters.
