IsraAid Vanuatu

IsraAid Vanuatu IsraAID is an international NGO which has been working in Vanuatu since Cyclone Pam in 2015.

We work in areas of DRR, MHPSS, GBV, WASH and Nutrition and equip local leaders with the tools to face future disasters.

Today, one year after the devastating 7.4 earthquake struck Vanuatu, we pause to remember those who lost their lives and to honour their memory. We also reflect on the extraordinary efforts of first responders and the humanitarian community who stood together in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

We acknowledge the strength, resilience, and spirit of the Ni-Vanuatu, whose ability to come together, rebuild, and move forward continues to inspire. Even in the face of profound loss, communities showed what it truly means to bounce back.

IsraAID was proud to stand alongside the people of Vanuatu during the response and recovery. Our teams contributed by establishing an MHPSS call centre and providing in-person mental health and psychosocial support to affected communities, supporting health screenings through the health cluster, restoring and rebuilding community water systems, and working with and training communities to construct water and sanitation facilities, strengthening preparedness for the future.

As we mark this anniversary, we express our solidarity with Vanuatu and our commitment to resilience, recovery, and hope.

Emotional violence is one of the most hidden forms of abuse, but its impact is deep.

Constant insults, humiliation, control, and threats can break a woman’s confidence, harm her mental health, and isolate her from support.

During the 16 Days of Activism, let’s speak up for women facing emotional abuse.

Violence isn’t always visible , but it always matters.

Break the silence. Support survivors. Stand for equality.

Physical violence is not a "mistake", an "accident", "a bad day" or "something that just happened". Physical violence is any force used to cause harm eg hitting, slapping, kicking, chocking. It is one of the most common forms of gender-based violence.

Physical violence steals safety, dignity, and the right to live without fear.

During the 16 Days of Activism, we highlight the urgent need to stop this abuse, support survivors, and challenge the attitudes that allow it to continue.

Everyone has a role to play. Speak up, stand with survivors, and promote respect and safety for all women and girls. Violence is never acceptable.

28/11/2025

Digital violence is harming women and girls every day.
Online bullying, stalking, and sharing images without consent are all forms of abuse.

During the 16 Days of Activism, let’s stand together to make online spaces safe.
Speak out. Support survivors. End digital violence.

27/11/2025

Gender-based violence is a critical issue that affects millions globally. It includes physical, emotional, and digital violence. In the digital age, online abuse and harassment are on the rise, adding new layers of harm.

Join us in raising awareness and taking action to end all forms of gender-based violence. Together, we can make a difference!

26/11/2025

Today marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign calling on all of us to speak up, act, and stand with survivors. This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls”, challenges us to raise our voices now, to end not only physical and sexual violence, but also the growing threat of digital violence targeting women and girls.

In Vanuatu and across the Pacific, the need for action has never been more urgent:

Almost 1 in 3 ever-partnered women and girls in Vanuatu experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence by a current or former intimate partner in the previous 12 months.

The Pacific region records some of the highest rates of violence against women in the world, with many countries reporting that two in every three women have experienced violence by an intimate partner or family member.

According to the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) 2011 national survey: about 60% of ever-partnered women (aged 15–49) have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime; nearly 68% have experienced emotional violence; and 69% have faced controlling behaviours from a partner. In 2024 VWC reported continued high demand for GBV support services.

These are not just numbers — each percentage point represents real women and girls whose lives have been disrupted by fear, harm, and control.

⚠️ As we step into this year’s 16-day campaign, we must remember: violence has moved into new spaces — including digital ones. Online harassment, cyberbullying, revenge p**n, threats over social media and messaging apps — these are all forms of gender-based violence. They are real threats to women’s dignity, safety, and human rights.

But change is possible. A safer digital world begins with the actions we take today.

Join us. Stand up. Speak out. UNiTE now — for a future where all women and girls can live free from violence, both offline and online.

On November 19th, the world celebrated World Toilet Day, a reminder that safe sanitation is a basic human right.

At IsraAID, we are committed to supporting this cause. Together with local partners, we work to:
- Promote the construction and use of good, affordable, and accessible toilets 🚽

IsraAID, in partnership with the WASH cluster, assisted as part of the December earthquake response project on Efate Island. We assessed communities around Efate and selected Napkou (Lelepa Landing) to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene access to the community on the northwest.

Our team built two rainwater harvesting systems, completed between August 25 and September 5, 2025. The project included building a structure, installing tanks, gutters and first flush systems to provide clean water to the community.

We acknowledge the Vanuatu Government through the wash cluster, partners and not forgetting the community assistance to make this project a success.

Today is World Mental Health Day💛, we're proud that educating about and providing support for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) is at the foundation of all IsraAID's Protection work globally and here in Vanuatu. In every humanitarian response and day to day, mental health matters.

IsraAID supported the PVCC Women's Council as they lead the World Clean Up Day campaign 2025 with an aim to clean up Port Vila from September 16-20, 2025. We provided this initiative with T-Shirts along with 600 rubbish bags which were used by the community.

Our team strongly supports this important initiative, and we stand alongside our local leaders and volunteers who are taking action to create a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.
We acknowledge PVCC Women’s Council for leading the charge in this week-long clean-up campaign. So let us all do our part by making our environments cleaner and safer and join cleanup efforts to help make a difference in our community! 🇻✊🤝🌎💪🇻🇺

This session helped us to “understand ourselves and how to do some simple exercises to relief stress, calm one’s mind to help us in our connection with our work and the people we work with….” Barry Sam, Wanfuteng Bank

One of the core pillars of IsraAID’s global programs—and especially in Vanuatu —is Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). In the wake of the devastating earthquake on December 17, 2024, IsraAID has partnered with local organizations and communities to provide critical support.

Through our earthquake response and recovery project, IsraAID has led multiple MHPSS sessions designed to help individuals and communities cope with the emotional and psychological impact of the disaster. 🤝🌎

IsraAID collaborated with Wanfuteng Bank, Black Sands and Melemaat communities to deliver several impactful MHPSS sessions for staff and community members.
IsraAID remains dedicated to working with local partners to strengthen communities to be healthier, safer, and resilient in Vanuatu. Together, we can overcome challenges and thrive. 😊💪🇻🇺

Tedei wol i selebretem “World Humanitarian Day”.
Hemi minim se yumi onarem olgeta wokman/woman long wol we oli save tekem bigfala risk blong oli riskim laef blong olgeta blong sevem naraman.
Tugeta yumi stanap, tugeta yumi strong!

On we honour humanitarian workers everywhere who risk — and sometimes give — their lives to serve others. The day reminds us that when protection fails, our collective resolve must rise.

In Vanuatu 🇻🇺, our IsraAid Vanuatu team were both survivors and responders after the earthquake. Despite experiencing the same devastation, they showed extraordinary professionalism and resilience — providing sustained psychosocial support to their own communities for three consecutive months and operating an MHPSS call centre 📞 in partnership with the Ministry of Health, delivering anonymous, multilingual emotional support by phone and text across Efate and beyond.

Alongside mental health support, IsraAid has been deeply involved in recovery and disaster-risk-reduction on Efate. Our teams ran hands-on technical workshops in food preservation and backyard gardening 🥦🍅🥒 to boost household nutrition and food security; repaired and replaced community water sources and promoted rainwater harvesting for safe water access; and organised practical trainings safe sanitation (clean toilets) to strengthen preparedness for future emergencies.

We’re also integrating mental health into DRR plans and training local leaders in Psychological First Aid to build lasting community resilience.

Humanitarian work is often unseen — it’s the local teams who stay, who listen, and with volunteers, who rebuild.

This we honour the quiet heroes of IsraAid Vanuatu and invite you to by recognising and supporting the teams rebuilding strength, hope, and resilience in Vanuatu and beyond.
