Happy World Oceans Day: This year’s global theme calls us to Reimagine our relationship with the ocean and build Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet. We’d like to do just that and call to our leaders to create a Port Vila Harbour Marine Protected Area.
With a rapidly growing population, urbanization and pollution, our harbour is no longer what it was, and our marine species deserve our support and protection.
Did you know that a marine protected areas does not necessarily mean there is a total ban on fishing, it means that there is a plan, and it’s enforced. It also means there’s more fish in our fishing grounds as a result (as the overall fish stock increases).
We talk about huge MPAs in the vast ocean space. We talk about our international waters and right to territories and islands. We talk about what communities can do. What about the waters right outside of our doorstep and capital city? If we can’t look after our environment right at our centre, how do we have a hope of doing it many miles away?
Lets not just reimagine something, lets do something drastically good. Who’s in support?
