Mental health legislation does exist in Vietnam to protect human rights, yet the practical implementation of the legislation is weak. Although a Mental Health Policy is in place, it is in urgent need of updating. There is a commendable National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), however, the services available currently cover only 77% of communes and treatment is only available for schizophrenia and

epilepsy. WHO Vietnam recently invited BasicNeeds Vietnam to coordinate the development of guidelines for management of Depression and Anxiety for primary health care system which marks the first step to revising the current National Mental Health Program (NMHP) of Vietnam.
