💔 Phong Dien Wildlife Project Withdrawal

Since 2024, we’ve been honored to support a government-led wildlife initiative, hopeful that our participation could positively impact the lives of animals in crisis. While we were excited about the potential, we’ve found that significant logistical and procedural challenges have limited our ability to deliver the standard of care and advocacy we believe all animals deserve.

After careful consideration, we’ve made the heartbreaking decision to step away from this project and re-focus our limited resources on our Hoi An sanctuary, where we can ensure direct, ethical, and lasting impact.

As we transition out, we will do everything we can to support the rehoming or release of the wildlife currently under care, as far as that is possible within existing systems. While we may no longer be directly involved in ongoing wildlife operations in Phong Dien, we remain available to assist in emergency cases and to advocate for the welfare of all species.

This was not an easy decision, but we believe it’s the right one.

If you have questions regarding our withdrawal from the project, please contact us directly.

🕊️ Thank you to everyone who supported us through this journey.

HUGE thanks to the amazing vets at Paws International Clinic in Da Nang for the exam on the slow loris. He’s headed back to the center tomorrow and has been deemed releasable ASAP. Tomorrow we are also getting blood work on the Giant Asian Pond Turtles to send to the lab to see if they are free of mycoplasma and herpes so they, too, can soon be released into the wild.

As we finish our project with the park, we are working hard to get the native endangered species out of the center as soon as possible and into the wild. More updates on releases soon. We have no control over when they can be released as that’s up to the authorities but we will fund for their transport and vet care as necessary.

Please donate today to ensure our vet bills are cleared and we are able to get these endangered species to their new wild lives!

Yesterday the government brought us a Pygmy Slow Loris. We do not have any background information on him yet and we need to get his vet exam, but for now we are just trying to get him comfortable and fed.

Please help us get his vet exam and order her some tree gum and other food for him.

13 years ago, I rescued this baby stump-tailed macaque from a trader in downtown Nha Trang. Benjamin Button, as he was called, stayed with me for only 16 days but he changed the trajectory of my life. His plight made me see the horrors done to his species and the total lack of facilities and organizations in Vietnam able to help him.

One year later, I started Vietnam Animal Welfare Organization with a friend, 2 years later renaming it Vietnam Animal Aid and Rescue ( ). From the beginning I had hoped to help macaques, but very quickly we were inundated with cats and dogs then a vet clinic and never had time to address the problems with these primates.

Fast forward 8 years to deciding it was time to start helping macaques in a rescue, rehab, release program. Then came covid…. That was tabled. Another 5 years later here we are working with wildlife rescued from the illegal trafficking of many species. Eventually the plan is to build out the enclosures to be able to get new intakes of macaques and plan their soft releases from troops we create on the 18 hectares property at Phong Dien wildlife center.

This work is DESPERATELY needed here, especially in central Vietnam. Most wildlife organisations stay clear of macaques and focus on endangered species, but these guys deserve a chance too.

Please help us build a pioneering program to care for many different species of rescued wildlife while also helping these poor macaques coming as confiscated pets and injured animals.

Where do our rescues all come from?

This is a great question here in central Vietnam. We’re a very long way from their confiscation point on the Chinese border over 1000km from our center, but that’s where most of these rescues come from.

All our rescues are victims of the illegal wildlife trade. Many came in huge groups of animals, most of which died in transport or not long after arrival. The police take these animals, then they have to call all the centers to ask if they can take in certain species. Sadly, most will not take any exotic species. Wildlife centers want releasable animals, not those they’ll need to provide lifelong sanctuary for. We have almost exclusively exotic species at our center, making us more of a sanctuary facility than a rescue/release program. There is a huge need for this, yet we really lack the resources to house these animals right now given the extremely poor state of the existing enclosures that need renovation. With your support, we can provide large aviaries for our many parrots and build a space for our exotic tortoises to thrive in a drier environment.

Please support our efforts to drastically improve the lives of these rescued species.

These guys are our Black-headed Caique parrots! 🦜

Our rescue center houses 7 of these gorgeous babies that were confiscated at the Chinese border last fall. They’re quite shy with people, but extremely talkative, and we are hoping soon to get them into a bigger aviary that will give them more space to fly and enjoy life.

Sadly, these birds are a long way from home. Their natural environment is the Amazon river region and Vietnam is thousands of miles from that. The trade in exotic bird species is simply disgusting. These birds were destined for a life in small cages as most birds have here, all living a horrible existence living up to 40 years. We hope to give them a much different life thanks to the support of generous donors and foundations in the future.

Treatment begins for a skin fungus on our Giant Asian Pond Turtles. They are getting daily Epsom salt soaks plus spraying with iodine to eliminate this problem.

Until last week, we had a 6 week break where we did not have our own international staff onsite while we waited for our new onsite manager to start. Sadly, the hygiene standards suffered under the government staff and now we’ve had to manage the problems that created. We had planned a release of these turtles this spring and now that they have a fungus, we must treat them at least a month and then plan again for them to go.

It’s unfortunate that many wildlife centers in Vietnam are not giving proper training in hygiene and animal management to their caretakers. This is something that we have battled since coming into the project last fall. While local staff may care, they simply don’t have the basic training in how enclosures must be cleaned, the amount of food to prepare for animals, providing enrichment, identifying and treating basic ailments, and how to maintain bio security protocols to prevent illness in the rescues.

This is why it’s vital that we have more experienced caretakers onsite at all times. We have already drastically improved the lives of animals here, but there is a mountain of work left to do. For now, our main priority is continuing to improve care standards while raising funds for enclosure renovations. Sadly, the government will not be helping with any of these funds and it remains our responsibility to get the money to improve the project. We are doing our best to get the grants we need for this massive undertaking.

Please support our vital work here for all the many species who were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.

This newborn pipistrelle bat was found at a home in Hoi An away from his mom. We often get calls about baby bats this time of year, but some are just far too small to help.

We’re hoping mom will come back for this one soon because we don’t have anything small enough to be able to feed him milk unfortunately.

The best chance of survival for any newborn is always their mom. If they don’t even have their eyes open, they are just so vulnerable and difficult to raise. Fingers crossed mom returns!

We continue to need to raise funds for the organization’s wildlife, domestic, and farmed species who need our help. As we are already thousands under budget just in April alone, we really need your support!

We’d love to hear your ideas on enrichment! These parrots are really in need of toys and entertainment while we work towards getting all of them into larger aviaries where they can express their natural behaviors.

For the moment, our biggest task for all the animals is getting their diets sorted out. While our own staff were not onsite for 6 weeks, there was a big regression in care standards that we need to address. One step forwards and two steps back seems to be the name of the game sometimes, but we’re hopeful that with more training and supervision, the local staff can raise their standards of care and have a deeper understanding of the needs of each individual animal onsite.

Our new wildlife manager, Ian, is off and running and has big plans for improving the site and getting the enclosures fixed so we can once again have new intakes of animals rescued from the wildlife trade.

We need YOUR support! This project just doesn’t work without funding for all the many details of things that this facility needs. The larger projects well expect to get grants and major gifts for, but we need a lot of small things like tools, bird toys, vet supplies and cleaning supplies.

Thank you for your support!

Today we got busy cleaning out the reptile and parrot rooms that were in serious need of a deep clean. We’re so glad to see the animals back to proper care and sparkling clean environments. Now the work of getting their enrichment back begins.

We’re working hard to get the existing larger enclosures fixed so that they are safe for our rescues to move in. They’ve been in smaller enclosures temporarily while we raise the funds with grants for repairing the ones that were already onsite but had not been constructed properly for safe habitats.

This is going to be a long and expensive process so we hope you’ll stick with us as we develop the property to be an amazing home for many rescues!

Please donate today to help us care for these deserving animals with nowhere else to go. Central Vietnam is sadly lacking in high welfare wildlife centers where confiscated and injured wildlife can live, be rehabbed, and either be released or stay in sanctuary care.

This project is going to give hope to so many victims of illegal wildlife trafficking!

It is with great sadness that we must share the news with you, that one of our oldest (and largest) residents has passed away.

Suri the Burmese python was loved by all of our staff members here at Phong Dien and her passing has truly left a hole in all of our hearts. Suri spent the first 28 years of her life as a pet in someone’s house before being surrendered over to us by her former owners due to their growing fear of her size. Due to her improper housing for the majority of her life combined, with her old age and obesity through improper feeding , Suri developed several health issues such as hyper calcemia, difficulty shedding and metabolic bone disease. We did all we could for this beautiful old girl but sadly we found her in the morning having passed away in the night. Rescue isn’t always happy endings, sometimes you can do all you can for an animal that is too far gone and lose the battle regardless. Thankyou for blessing our lives Suri. 🐍

Wild animals make terrible pets, please help us to end the illegal wildlife trade and keep animals like Suri where they belong, in the wild 🌴
