From July 28 to August 2, Surgical Volunteers International partnered with the Ministry of Health of El Salvador and Hospital Nacional de la Mujer to launch a pilot breast reconstruction initiative for women following breast cancer treatment.
Together, Salvadoran and SVI medical teams performed advanced microsurgical DIEP flap breast reconstructions and other reconstructive procedures, marking the first microsurgical breast reconstructions performed in El Salvador.
But this mission was about more than surgery. Teams worked side-by-side to share knowledge, train local medical professionals, evaluate additional patients for future reconstruction, and help build the foundation for a sustainable program that can continue in El Salvador.
SVI also donated a microsurgical operating microscope, Doppler ultrasound equipment, anesthesia supplies, medications, and other surgical equipment to support ongoing care at the hospital.
