📣 เรื่องเล่าจากงานประชุมประจำปี WCC จัดขึ้นที่ประเทศฮ่องกง หัวข้อสัมนาวิชาการเรื่อง The Scottish Fold, What does it teach us?

‼️เคยได้ยินกันไหมว่าหลายๆประเทศและสมาคมในสมาพันธ์แมวโลก WCC นั้นแบนหรือไม่ยอมรับสายพันธุ์สุดน่ารักพันธุ์นี้ ‼️ ทุกวันนี้เรื่องนี้ยังคงเป็นที่ถกเถียงกันอยู่ว่าสมาคมต่างๆควรทำอย่างไรกันต่อไปดี ในโลกที่ welfare และความเป็นอยู่ของแมวมีความสำคัญและมีบทบาทมากขึ้นทุกวันๆ
สาเหตุที่มีการเเบนแมวสายพันธุ์นี้หลักๆคือโรคที่เรียกว่า Osteochondrodysplasia (OCD) หรือในภาษาไทยคือ “ภาวะที่กระดูกเจริญผิดปกติ/ผิดรูป” ซึ่งหากน้องแมวตกอยู่ในภาวะนี่จะมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่เเย่ด้วยความเจ็บปวดที่เกิดขึ้นจากการเจริญเติบโตที่ผิดรูปของกระดูกนั้นเอง
📖 การศึกษาและงานวิจัยที่ผ่านมาพบว่า OCD ส่งผลกับแมวหูพับทุกตัวและในแมวหูพับแบบ FdFd นั้นความรุนแรงของภาวะ OCD จะรุนแรงมาก
ทั้งนี้ทาง Dr. Marilee กรรมการ All breed จาก CFA และ breeder ของสายพันธุ์นี่ให้ข้อมูลในงานประชุม WCC ที่ประเทศ Hong Kong โดยสรุปได้เป็นประเด็นสำคัญได้ว่า:
- OCD ส่งผลกับกระดูกและข้อเป็นหลัก โดยส่วนที่มีโอกาสเกิดภาวะนี้มากที่สุดคือขา/เท้าหลัง ส่วนอื่นที่มีโอกาสเกิดภาวะนี้คือส่วนกระดูกสันหลังและหาง ทั้งนี่มีหลายคนสับสนว่าโรคนี้ทำให้เกิดภาวะผิดปกติที่บริเวณสะโพกได้ด้วย แต่จนถึงปัจจุบันยังไม่มีการรายงานการเกิด OCD ในสะโพก
- หูพับในสายพันธุ์นี้เกิดจากการกลายพันธุ์ของยีน TRPV4 (Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 4)(autosomal dominant) ที่มีน่าที่สำคัญใน calcium signaling และ cartilage development ซึ่งการกลายพันธุ์นี้เป็นสาเหตุของภาวะ OCD
- การศึกษาที่ผ่านมาที่ยืนยันภาวะ OCD ใน scottish นั้นเป็นการศึกษาที่มาจากกลุ่มประชากรที่น้อยมาก และแมวที่เข้าร่วมการศึกษามักเป็นน้องแมวที่มีอาการมาเบื้องต้นแล้ว ซึ่งสามารถเป็นข้อโต้เเย้งได้ว่าประชากรในการศึกษาที่ผ่านๆมาอาจจะไม่ถือว่าเป็นประชากรตัวอย่างที่ดีของสายพันธุ์นี้จากทั่วโลกได้ (inadequate representation of scottish folds around the world)
- การศึกษาโดย Dr. Marilee และทีมพบว่าความรุนแรงของ ภาวะ OCD นั้นน้อยลงในแมวหูพับแบบ hetorozygous (Fdfd) เมื่อเทียบกับ homozygous (FdFd)
มาถึงตรงนี้ทุกคนคนมีคำถามเหล่านี้ขึ้นมาในหัว
❓คำถาม: สรุปเรายังบรีดสายพันธุ์นี้ต่อได้ไหม สมาคมจะเเบนหรือถอดการรับรองสายพันธุ์ scottish fold หรือไม่
⭐️คำตอบ: “บรีดได้ ไม่แบน แต่ …” เนื่องจากข้อมูลในปัจจุบันยังไม่ได้ชี้ชัดหรือเป็นตัวเเทนที่ดีของประชากรทั้งหมดของ scottish fold ทั่วโลก ในตอนนี้ทาง Dr. Marilee เชื่อว่าเรายังสามารถบรีดสายพันธุ์นี้ต่อได้ และยังไม่มีเเนวโน้มที่ CFA จะแบนสายพันธุ์นี้ ในส่วนของทาง WCF นั้นคาดว่าคงจะคิดเห็นไปทางเดียวกัน ทั้งนี้เพื่อรักษาสายพันธุ์นี้ไว้ทาง FUR เห็นว่าการเลือกบรีด (selective breeding) ถือเป็นเรื่องที่สำคัญมากเพื่อที่จะพัฒนาสายพันธุ์ไปในทิศทางที่ดี ลดโอกาสการเกิด OCD และรักษาสายพันธุ์นี้ให้อยู่ต่อไปแบบมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี
❓คำถาม: บรีดได้แล้วบรีดยังไงหละ ถึงจะได้ Scottish fold ที่สุขภาพดี
⭐️ คำตอบ: ในการประชุม WCC ครั้งนี้ Dr. Marilee ให้คำแนะนำสำหรับการบรีดมาทั้งหมด 5 ข้อดังนี้
1. ไม่ผสมแมวหูพับเข้าด้วยกัน - เนื่องจากหูพับเกิดจากการกลายพันธุ์ของยีน TRPV4 ซึ่งเป็นยีนที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ OCD เช่นเดียวกันจึงไม่ควรย้ำและเพิ่มโอกาสการเกิด OCD นอกจากนี้ ยังมีผลการศึกษาว่าความรุนแรงของ OCD นั้นน้อยกว่าในแมวหูพับ Fdfd เมื่อเทียบกับ FDFD
2. ผสมแมวที่มีใบเพ็ดดีกรีเท่านั้น - เพื่อจะทราบแน่นอนว่าสายพันธุ์ของน้องๆที่นำมาเพาะพันธุ์ต่อนั้นเกิดจากการผสมของหูพับเข้ากับหูตั้งเท่านั้น
3. ผสมแมวหูพับสนิทเท่านั้น
4. หลักเลี่ยงการเลี้ยงแมวในที่ร้อน - การศึกษาพบว่าอากาศร้อนเป็นตัวกระตุ้นการทำงานของ TRPV4 ตัว Dr. Marilee มีแจ้งเพิ่มเติมในที่ประชุมด้วยว่าตัวเขาเองเลี้ยงแมวที่อุณหภูมิ 22 องศาเสมอ
5. ให้อาหารที่อุดมไปด้วยสารอาหาร - คนที่เลี้ยงแมวสายพันธุ์นี้สามารถเลือกอาหารที่มีคุณประโยชน์ในการบำรุงกระดูกและข้อ เช่นอาหารดิม (barf) และ/หรือเสริมด้วยวิตามินอย่าง Glucosamine และ Chondroitin sulfate
นอกจาก 5 ข้อนี้แล้ว Breeder ควรจะเป็น Responsible breeder มีหมั่นคอยหาความรู้ อัพเดทข้อมูลอยู่เสมอเพื่อมาปรับเปลี่ยนการดูแลและพัฒนาสายพันธุ์แมวของตัวเองต่อไป นอกจากนี้ Breeder ควรจะตรวจโรคทางพันธุกรรมอื่นๆเช่น PKD, PRA, HCM และโรคอื่นๆ รวมถึงกลุ่มเลือดของแมวในฟาร์ม

📣 Story from WCC - The Scottish Fold, What Does It Teach Us?

‼️ Have you heard that many countries and cat associations under the World Cat Congress (WCC) have banned or do not recognize this adorable breed? ‼️ Even today, it remains a topic of debate as to what associations should do moving forward in a world where feline welfare and well-being are becoming increasingly important.
🔎 The main reason this breed has been banned in some places is due to a condition called Osteochondrodysplasia (OCD) — a disorder in which bone and cartilage development is abnormal.
Cats affected by this condition tend to have a poor quality of life due to pain from the malformed bones.
📖 Previous research has shown that OCD affects every folded-ear cat, and that those with the homozygous genotype (FdFd) suffer more severe symptoms.
Dr. Marilee, an All-Breed judge from CFA and a Scottish Fold breeder, presented this issue at the WCC meeting in Hong Kong. Her key points included:
• OCD primarily affects bones and joints particularly the extremities, especially the hind legs/feet. Other potentially affected areas include the spine and tail.
• Many people mistakenly believe that OCD affects the hips, but to date, no cases of hip involvement have been reported in relation to OCD.
• The folded ears are caused by a mutation in the TRPV4 gene (Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 4), which is an autosomal dominant gene involved in calcium signaling and cartilage development. This mutation is concerning as it is responsible for the OCD condition.
• Existing studies confirming OCD in Scottish Folds often come from very small sample populations, and most cats in those studies already showed symptoms beforehand. This raises the concern that these studies do not represent the global Scottish Fold population adequately.
• Dr. Marilee and her research team found that the severity of OCD is lower in heterozygous cats (Fdfd) compared to homozygous cats (FdFd).
❓ So where does that leave us? Can we still breed this cat? Will associations ban the Scottish Fold?
⭐️ Answer: “Breeding is still allowed. Not banned. But…”
Because current data does not yet conclusively represent the global Scottish Fold population, Dr. Marilee believes breeding can continue, and there are no current plans from CFA to ban this breed.
To preserve this breed responsibly, FUR believes selective breeding is essential to improve the breed, reduce the incidence of OCD, and ensure Scottish Folds have a good quality of life.
❓ So if breeding is still allowed, how should we breed Scottish Folds responsibly?
⭐️ Dr. Marilee provided 5 key recommendations at the WCC conference:
1. Never breed two folded-ear cats together –
Since the TRPV4 gene is directly linked to OCD, breeding two folds increases the risk and severity of the condition. Studies confirm that Fdfd cats have milder symptoms than FdFd.
2. Only breed cats with certified pedigrees –
This ensures that the breeding pair is indeed a cross between a folded-ear and a straight-ear cat.
3. Only breed cats with fully folded ears – may actually denote an “inactive” gene
(Note: The context of this point may refer to selecting individuals that fully express the fold trait if breeding, though ideally still crossed with straight-ear cats.)
4. Avoid keeping cats in hot environments –
Heat has been shown to activate the TRPV4 gene.
Dr. Marilee personally keeps her cats in a room maintained at 22°C.
5. Provide a diet rich in bone and joint support nutrients –
Owners should consider BARF (raw) diets or add joint supplements like Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfate.

In addition to these five points, responsible breeders must continually educate themselves, stay updated with research, and be willing to adapt their breeding practices.
Breeders should also screen for other genetic diseases like PKD, PRA, HCM, and determine blood type compatibility within the cattery.
