From Memory to Solidarity — Whose Memory Becomes History?

Whose Memory Becomes History? explores which memories enter official history and which experiences of suffering and voices are pushed into silence, through a series of conversations between Sunyoung Oh and Indonesian historian and curator Andi Achdian. Addressing colonialism and state violence, political community, citizenship, and public memory, the book shows that history is not simply a record of the past but the outcome of continuing social choices and struggles over remembrance and forgetting. Through the sculptures of Dolorosa Sinaga, it also gives visible form to suffering, resistance, and solidarity that cannot be fully expressed in words, expanding the meaning of citizenship beyond legal status to include the right to speak, to be remembered, to have one’s suffering acknowledged, and to demand accountability. Although grounded in Indonesia’s historical experience, the questions raised by the book extend to Korea and other societies: Whose testimony do we choose to hear, whose suffering do we continue to overlook, and what kinds of history can research, documentation, museums, and art create in resistance to forgetting?

The book will be available for purchase as an e-book through online platforms worldwide. Proceeds from its sales will be used to support residents affected by flooding in North Jakarta, Indonesia.

Daniel Duarte Pereira and Sunyoung Oh are researchers and creative practitioners whose collaborative work explores place, movement, and the sensory and perceptual experiences that emerge across different geographies. Their collaboration began in 2023 through Song of the Wind, during which Daniel stayed in Wando, South Korea, and engaged with the local environment and its rhythms, while Sunyoung developed a parallel inquiry grounded in site-responsive and perceptual approaches.

Expanding from this initial encounter, their research traces connections between Korea and Portugal, examining how place, memory, and embodied experience intersect and evolve through processes of observation, exchange, and reflection. Moving between distinct cultural and spatial contexts, their collaboration unfolds as a continuous dialogue that seeks to articulate subtle relationships between environment and perception.

This collaborative research will be concluded and presented in the form of a publication.

"Interweaving with Water in Hsinchu"

A gathering that invites us to reconsider Hsinchu—often imagined as a high-tech city—through the flow of water and the relations it shapes. Centered on Nanliao, Xiangshan’s coastal areas, and the Touqian River, the program reveals another landscape of Hsinchu, where water, mobility, labor, migration, habitation, and collective memory are intricately interwoven.

With the participation of the Fengdong Zhuqian Cultural Association, Livelyland Design, the Taiwan Clean Water Action Union, and leaders and captains from the Naruwan Cultural Cluster, the gathering brings together diverse stories of boatbuilding, fishing, ocean culture, water advocacy, migration, and settlement.

Building on Sunyoung Oh’s preliminary research conducted in 2025, the program unfolds through conversations with local artists, researchers, and activists, opening a space for artistic co-creation.

"Incomplete Collaboration: Asymmetrical Responsibility in Art and Society" examines the gap between the idealized language of collaboration and the uneven realities in which it is actually lived. Although collaboration is often described in terms of mutuality, generosity, and hope, in practice it unfolds under unequal conditions. Participants do not begin from the same position, assume the same burdens, or remain affected in the same way. Some carry greater responsibility, some remain implicated for longer, and some continue to live with the consequences long after a project has formally ended.

Challenging idealized accounts of working together, this book reflects on what collaboration means under unstable and unequal conditions, and on the responsibilities that persist beyond the visible frame of the work.
