St. John Land Conservancy Community non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the natural & historic resources of St John John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. John forever.

The SJLC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of lands of important historic and natural beauty on St. SJLC is a 501(c)3 non-profit land trust. Our mission is to protect mostly coastal properties of high conservation value and lands that surround or interconnect these untrammeled areas. We are completely independent from the VI National Park, yet collaborate with them for land protection outside its authorized boundaries. We are an all-volunteer organization united in the task of acquiring land through donations like several parcels including beachfront at Haulover on St. John and a pristine parcel on Lovango Cay, but we need your help! We need funding to help us cover the costs of this and other important conservation projects — for unavoidable costs such as signage, liability insurance, accountant fees, website hosting, and the like. We also raise the necessary funds for saving threatened parcels. Would you consider making a charitable contribution? You can help us continue to preserve precious natural areas that are of great public benefit but under a substantial threat of development by making a tax deductible donation now — you will be helping preserve a piece of St. We are also available for donations of land, conservation easements to protect existing properties, or other variations on natural area protection. Such transactions can realize substantial tax benefits for the donor (eg. a tax deduction for its fair market value that can be written off against ordinary income for the next five years). Donating land could be an excellent option for you or someone you know. Native plants are the foundation of healthy ecosystems, providing food and shelter for wildlife, stabilizing soils, supporting pollinators, and helping our forests and coastlines thrive.

We were inspired by the story of Clare Weaver, field botanist with the Virgin Islands Rare Plant Initiative (VIRPI). Clare spends her days exploring forests, coastlines, and island "guts" in search of rare and endangered native plants, collecting seeds, documenting populations, and helping preserve the incredible botanical diversity of the Virgin Islands.

We're especially grateful for Clare's partnership with the St. John Land Conservancy. She conducts native plant surveys on properties under SJLC stewardship and on lands we're evaluating for future conservation. Her work helps us understand the ecological significance of these special places and ensures that our conservation decisions are guided by sound science.

Every protected acre is more than open space—it's a home for native plants, wildlife, and the natural communities that make St. John extraordinary.

The health of our wildlife depends on the health of the habitats they call home.

We enjoyed reading "Healing the Wild: Inside the Territory's Wildlife Rehabilitation," published in Go Wild, Go Fish VI, the magazine of the U.S. Virgin Islands Division of Fish & Wildlife. In this latest op-ed, Olasee Davis shares reflections on mangoes, memory, seasonal cycles, and our relationship with Mother Nature — all through the lens of Caribbean culture and environmental stewardship.

🌊 What’s floating our way?

Scientists are predicting a record-breaking year for sargassum seaweed across the Caribbean—and St. John is already preparing.

While large amounts of sargassum can impact certain shorelines, it’s also a natural and important part of the ocean ecosystem—providing habitat for sea turtles, fish, and other marine life.

Here’s the silver lining: thanks to St. John’s unique geography, many of our beloved North Shore beaches are often protected from heavy buildup. 🌴

As always, nature keeps us on our toes—and reminds us just how connected our island is to the wider Caribbean ecosystem.
